Hello!

What a fantastic resource this has been for me already and I was just told my big boy is probably diabetic this afternoon.

To start, went in yesterday as Sawyer was having some diarrhea with mucus. He is a very anxious and easily stressed boy, and I almost lost him a few years ago to a blockage so I do my best to keep his stress at a minimum. Trips to the vet are awful for him and he usually has to be sedated. They did so, took some blood and gave a 3-year rabies vaccine. We were sent home with some tools to collect urine and poop samples.

Today I got an update on the blood panel that his blood glucose was I believe he said 318 (could have been a little higher or lower but this number sticks out in my head) and that he is potentially diabetic. My intent is to get the urine sample tomorrow if all goes well which the vet said is the better way to confirm this. He mentioned that they normally see spikes in blood glucose with stressed boys like mine, but not quite so high.

So since then I’ve been going up and down emotionally and trying to find as much info as I can which led me here. A few things have popped up in terms of questions and my vet is closed and any help from you lovely people would be just so amazing.

I’ve read about neuropathy and noticed just today he is limping a little with an awkward gait. Prior to the vet and his tummy upset he was fine. Is this something that can come about within 24 hours or is it possible it’s from the vaccine and sedation (like soreness I guess)?

Also, is the over 300 level concerning for another day or two? I don’t have insulin or test strips since he hasn’t been officially diagnosed yet and if all goes well with collecting his urine I should have that information by Friday. Then I would imagine I would run back to the vet before they close for the weekend to collect supplies needed to take care of my boy.

I searched the forum but was having trouble getting the right keywords I think so hopefully this is alright. Either way I think what’s done here is truly amazing and am appreciative and grateful to have found this community right from the start. Thank you to all who take their time to read not only my post but all the others and offer insight and help.

Hi and welcome to the group. No, being over 300 for another day or two should not be a concern. Are you testing for ketones though?

Ketostix work very well for this purpose, you just dip into a urine clump, or catch some urine in a ladle or put plastic wrap under the litter.

thank you for your input! I dropped off some urine at the vet this morning so they’re running some tests and I’m going to get some of those Ketostix this afternoon.
