Hi...I wanted to introduce myself and not sure if I'm doing this in the right place so pardon me if I'm posting in the wrong area. My name is Robyn and my kitty's is Tabby...she is a 14 1/2 yr old tabby who I purchased for $5 from a newspaper ad when she was about 4 -6 weeks old. In 2008 I noticed polydipsia and polyuria and took her to the vet for bloodwork and at the time they didn't indicate her blood sugar was elevated (they say it will elevate under stress, like the stress of going to the vet) but had they done so at the time I would have followed up. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago, with no problems besides the continued polydipsia and polyuria and a few bouts with constipation with fecal extractions and no advice from the vet, just an RX for Lactulose syrup. Three weeks ago she suddenly (literally overnight) became lethargic and wouldn't eat and wouldn't hold anything down...I didn't think it was constipation b/c she had a good BM 2 days before I took her to the vet. They did bloodwork and found her blood sugar was 287 and she was in liver disease with an extremely elevated bilirubin level. 2 days later, still change, she had an ultrasound and they couldn't determine whether it was a mass or infection in her liver. They gave her a 2 week antibiotic shot and an rx for metronidazole, which she wouldn't hold down. 2 days later again and I decided against hospitalizing her and received instruction on administering subcu fluids and syringe feedings, she got an anti-emetic shot and was finally taking food thru a syringe. 1 week later, she still hadn't had a BM and was being syringe fed Hill's RX A/D diet and Friskies Indoor Salmon, about 4-6 syringes a day...in that time she developed wheezing and I couldn't get the metronidazole down so they prescribed her marbofloxacin, which went down with a little more success thru a dropper. Last Monday I finally went with my instincts and decided to take her in for another extraction and an enema...she appeared near death several times..but after that she came home and ate on her own for the first time since all this began. Then she got constipated again, no BM in over 3 days although she had only been eating wet food (she's been having a hard time w kibble the past 3 wks too) so I read online about Miralax and tried that starting Fri night and also started feeding her the Wellness Pouches, which even w no appetite she attacked the gravy with gusto. She started w a small BM on Sat which was hard and I suspect the beginning of another blockage and has had 2 very good BMs with a little diarrhea at the end and diarrhea this afternoon. Once I saw the diarrhea I immediately stopped the Miralax so her last dose was last night (1/8 tsp BID). So now the question is...once she is regulated should I try 1/8 once per day and see how she does. I must add that since the Sat she is 90% back to herself, eating like a pig, she has been drinking and urinating her normal amt for the past 2 weeks but don't want to use her fountain anymore and she's had a fountain for about 12 yrs now...although a little tired 2day after the diarrhea, which was in the afternoon and her 'usual' time is between 5a-7a every day. I did contact her vet 2day and he said if she bounced back this much then if it is a mass in her liver it's probably not cancer, either it IS an infection or possibly a benign tumor. We do have an appt Sat to get her bloodwork done again and instruction on how to test her at home (my dad is diabetic so we have a meter). So I guess intially is if I should wait for her BMs to return to normal and then maybe try 1/8tsp once a day so prevent future occurances? Sorry this is so long, def a long road for this little fighter and I'm amazed she has pulled thru so far and is even walking with a bit of a 'spring' in her step again... Thanks for any input :)

I am not sure about the diabetes. It sounds like your kitty certainly has a problem with constipation. You might include that in your subject line to attract others with the same problems. There are lots of different treatment plans you can try.

One small thing you can do to keep her hydrated is to add water to her wet food so it is a little soupy. That could make things "move along".

Did your vet do a fructosamine test? That is the definitive test for diabetes. It sounds like your kitty had high blood sugars that could have been caused by stress or constipation.
I wonder if she is diabetic?

Wow you have so much going on most of which is over my head. I just want to welcome you and tell you to hang in there others will be here soon to welcome you and help you with your questions.

Is Tabby currently on insulin? If so, what type and how much?

Maybe take some time to read the FAQ's hear while you're waiting for more responces.

Again WELCOME
