Hi there, I'm glad to have found this site. :)

Our kitty, Dundee, who is 18 or 19 right now, has had diabetes for about a decade, though his pancreas did decide to kick back in for a few years after being switched to a raw food diet. Unfortunately, the diabetes came back after a stressful period for him where our critters were cared for in our home by a petsitter that, it turned out, was an idiot and did not take care of them properly. :( Dundee has been on Lantus for most of this time and has been on only that for the past several years.

He's never needed more than 1 unit of Lantus, twice daily, and now we've got him down to 0.5 unit thanks to the information on home glucose monitoring I got from this site. :) In past years, he seemed very 'easy' with the diabetes, especially after being switched to a raw diet, and I relied mainly on blood sugar curves done at the vet's office and urine sugar strips. I wish I'd not been so intimidated by home monitoring back then. Obviously, it's the best way of staying on top of things. Now that Dundee is older and has had some dental issues and has a URI that pops up every now and again, we wanted to monitor him much more closely, not to mention save him the stress of the half hour drive to the vet clinic, which causes a lot of fear for him. At his last curve, the vet said there was a possibility he didn't actually need a full unit, but they wanted to be careful with changes. So, a couple of weeks ago we got a FreeStyle Lite glucose meter and have been monitoring his sugar. This was after a bit of a scare where I thought he was having a hypoglycemic episode, where he was sleeping more heavily than usual, had a little bit of a tremor going on, and just seemed "off" to me. After this many years of having multiple cats, I have learned to trust my instincts where their health is concerned. I gave him a bit of honey in with some of his food (he wouldn't take it without it) and he didn't get his shot the next morning because I didn't want to chance it until we'd gone out and gotten a monitor.

As of recently (about a month ago, possibly a bit less), we've also got him on a supplement called CannaPet. This is from the hemp plant and does *not* have THC in sufficient quantities to cause psychoactive effects. The CBDs contained in the plant material are beneficial for myriad health issues, to include diabetes. Interestingly, it seems to be helping with his arthritis AND his blood sugar levels have been slowly, but steadily, declining since he's been on it. As we are now down to 0.5 units of Lantus twice daily, I'm hoping that we will eventually see him recover functioning to the point where he no longer requires the insulin and can be regulated via diet alone. *crosses fingers*

Anyway, thanks so much for running this website! What a great place for people to learn about their cat's health. :-D

Hello to you and to Dundee, and welcome to FDMB!

You've found the best site on the planet for help and support with feline diabetes.
And there are lots of Lantus users here who will be able to help you with that specific insulin.

Well done, you, for learning to hometest! :RAHCAT
Hometesting is an amazing tool for understanding and managing a cat's diabetes, and will certainly help to keep Dundee safe (as well as possibly saving on vet's bills too.)
Re the meter you're using though (Freestyle Lite), I think that's a meter that some people have had some issues with. If I recall correctly it reads OK in the lower blood glucose numbers, but doesn't read high numbers accurately. I think some folks have thought their cats were doing quite well only to find that the meter wasn't registering the higher range of numbers. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...?)

Is Dundee eating a raw diet at the moment?

Looking forward to getting to know you and Dundee better.
(And would you like to share your name with us? Calling you by name sounds so much better that saying 'hey, you!' )

Hmm....well that's something I'd definitely be interested in knowing (ref the meter)! His reading yesterday before breakfast (and before his shot) was 7.6mmol/L and 3.5 hours later was 8.8mmol. Today it was 6.7mmol before breakfast/his shot. Another half hour to go before I test him again. He eats twice a day, with his food being measured, and yes is still eating raw. :)

And also, my name is Cindi. lol

Hello Cindi,welcome to the forum.
Just to let you know that I have been using the Freestyle Lite meter for the past 8 months,I chose this make as it is the only meter available in the UK that works with such a small sample of blood, but as Baileys ears are not very cooperative at giving me blood I don't have any other choice. On a couple of occasions when I have hit a vein, and there has been more blood I have compared readings with another meter I have (contour next) and yes there is a slight difference I would say on average the Freestyle reads about 10% lower than the Contour,This happened yesterday when the freestyle read 11.2 and the same sample of blood put onto the Contour read 13.1
I think if you tested blood from the same test on a variety of different meters you would get varying results from most of them!

Thanks so much for the reply! How disheartening.. :( Well, maybe I'll try picking up another type of meter. I thought I had read in my internet journeys that there was a lot of satisfaction with the Relion (Walmart brand) meter. I had actually gone out looking for that specific meter that day, but settled on the FreeStyle because the nearest Walmart didn't have the Relion. :-/ I'll check at another location, perhaps, unless people have been having an issue with that one as well?

I am sticking with the Freestyle lite,I know it' reads low so I work that into the equation, remember with all meters there can be a difference if you do two readings from the same blood drop from the same meter,I think they say it could be up to 20% ,someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Maybe it's best to have one that reads too low, rather than one that reads too high? Especially as his blood sugar was, just a few minutes ago (which is about 5 hours post breakfast/insulin for him), 5.3mmol.

Is the Contour noted for being particularly accurate? I'm a little bit on the fence now about getting another meter, BUT, if there was one that was pretty much bang on every time it was used, I would probably give some thought to going out and picking one up. Just because I'm paranoid that way.

Welcome Cindi from another Canadian. I too started with the Freestyle Lite due to the small blood drop requirement. After a few weeks I did a cross border shopping trip and picked up a Relion Confirm at a US Walmart - they aren't sold in Canada. Take a look at Neko's 2012 SS to see what happened to the numbers when I switched meters. It's the numbers at the higher end that weren't represented correctly on the Freestyle and since Neko has a high dose condition, it was quite the shock when I made the change. I use the Bayer Contour as a backup now. It measures fairly closely to the Relion, but does need a bit bigger blood drop. I'm close enough to the border I make the occasional trip down to pick up more strips for my Relion.

Sounds like Dundee is seeing some nice numbers, so the meter issue may not be a big one for you. Taking care of the dental may help you get him back into remission again. It's a common reason for cats to have to go back on the juice.

Wendy,do you think it is possible that a freestyle meter bought recently is more accurate? I read somewhere on the forum that meters are constantly being updated, this has made me concerned, but I don't have a choice as I said before it is the only meter on UK market that requires such a small drop of blood.

Cindi,I have now had a chance to look back on Baileys readings, and these are the differences from the same sample of blood first on Freestyle lit then on Bayer Contour
F/L. B/C
11.2. 13.1
14.3. 17
12.2. 13.6
13. 15.5
14.4. 15.3
17.2. 20

I understand that there is a manufacturers tolerance of 20% on ALL meters (which I think is a big difference) so on that basis to me it looks like the Freestyle Lite is reading within those quide lines.also I do believe the Relion Confirm is made by Abbots for Walmart,Abbots are the Freestyle manufacturers.
Hope this is of some help, like most things associated with this awful FD it is as clear as mud to me!!!!
Good luck. Diane

Diane - the Relion Confirm is made by Arkray for Walmart. There were a number of people who got caught by the Freestyle issue a couple years ago, but they could indeed have changed their strips and/or meters by now. The comparisons with Bayer you did show it's pretty good now in the mid ranges.

Thanks Wendy,For a while now I have been concerned about the negative feedback re Freedom Lite, but as I mentioned before Baileys ears are not very cooperative in giving me much of a blood sample! and all other meters in the UK require more blood.Doing this comparison, and with your comments that it seems fairly accurate in the mid range, settles my doubts.
Hope this helps you too Cindi. Thankyou both Diane

Thanks a lot, guys! After some consideration, I may pop across the border and pick up a Relion with a good supply of strips. With Dundee's lower glucose readings he likely would be fine with the FreeStyle and, as far as me using it goes, I've been quite comfortable with it. BUT the strips are insanely expensive up here, which is a definite negative. :( I found some reasonably priced ones on Amazon, but they only read for the American FreeStyle models it would appear, so I am out of luck. Ironically, the Canadian Walmart site SAYS they carry the Relion meter, but I haven't seen hide nor hair of one in any of the stores I've been in.

Talk to the WalMart pharmacist about stocking them. He may be able to do that for you.

Never seen Relion in Canada walmart.

I use the bayer contour when I run out of relion prime strips that I get across the border. You can get the bayer contour strips for ~$40 including shipping for 100 if you get them on ebay -almost half the price of the same ones in shoppers. Just make sure the vendor is reputable and that the expiry is ok on them.

Wendy
