My 14yr old female tested over 300 yesterday. They want to retest of course,,but I wish to get her on a low carb diet..no more of that Fancy Feast Dry food she eats so much of. She eats Fancy Feast Fish and Shrimp Flaked..but wont touch anything else. I was wondering if maybe I could make her something homemade she may like... also.. can someone suggest a low carb dry food or dry treat? She also eats lots of Temptations... which i have to assume is not good either..HELP!

Hello and welcome to FDMB,

A diagnosis of feline diabetes can seem quite overwhelming at first. But it does get easier. Honestly. And we can help you.

May I ask a couple of questions?

Is your cat on insulin yet? And if so, which insulin and what dose?
If your cat is not yet on insulin then this would be a good time to remove the dry food and switch to a low carb wet/canned (or raw) diet.
If your cat IS on insulin then we'd advise that you only start to remove dry food once you have learned to monitor your cat's blood glucose levels at home.

Regarding low carb treats. Many people here give plain cooked chicken or freeze dried meat treats.

Are you willing to learn to test your cat's blood glucose levels at home? Most of us here do that. It's not hard to learn; it won't hurt your cat (and will help to keep your cat safe); and it will save you a lot of money in vet's bills. It only involves taking the teensiest droplet of blood from the outer edge of your cat's ear and testing that using a glucose meter. Most people here use ordinary glucose meters made for humans.

What is your name? And your cat's name?

Welcome!

If you're not on insulin yet, go for that food change asap. Otherwise, focus on blood glucose testing.

Pop over to Cat Info for lots of great info on Feline Nutrition, plus a food list to print out where you can identify low carb (<10% calories from carbohydrates) for regular diet and high carb foods for managing when the glucose is low. Also, there are tips on transitioning to canned food there.

The Arkay line of glucometers is sold at WalMart under the ReliOn brand and are fairly inexpensive, plus reasonably accurate (using numbers developed specifically for cats). You'll want to pick up a glucometer, test strips, lancets, and syringes. The lancets should be around 26-27 gauge.

If using a U-100 insulin, the syringes that work best for most are 3/10 cc (or mL - same thing), with half unit markings, 30-31 gauge, and a short needle.

My name is Richie..cat is Pinky... No,shes not on insulin,we just found out yesterday. I just received an e-mail from a Dr,Pierson who said a blood glucose of 300 is not enough to make a diagnosis on it`s own. I am not sure what that means. Yes,I would test her at home..the biggest problem is that she only eats that Fancy Feast Fish and Shrimp..she won`t touch anything else. Except that dry food and temptations.

Do you know of any videos showing the ear pricking procedure?

I'm hoping that was Dr. Lisa who is a member of this board. I don't want to put words in her mouth, but I think she's saying that a one time test that shows a BG of 300 isn't conclusive evidence of diabetes. Other tests, such as a fructosimine test, a full blood panel, and a urinalysis can be done to confirm the diagnosis. Other conditions might cause a short-term spike in BG levels. Hopefully you've been able to message her back?

Yeah she doesn`t seem to want to answer my questions about food brands. Anyway,we brought her back to the vet where she now tested 220..she has not been eating well..she does vomit,2 times tonight. Not much comes up,frothy I guess would describe it. The vet said he does "not" think she is a diabetic...but he is doing a Fructosamine test,Urinalysis & an Ultrasound to see if there is something else going on. Hoping for the best,,but we are quite worried.

here's a shortcut list that has only the low ones for you.
Since your cat will only eat seafood....
TikiCat has many other seafood varieties that are all 1% or 0% carbs. I don't have them listed.
Soulistic is mostly seafood flavors.
And the Avoderm has many seafood varieties here, low carb.
Maybe eventually you can mix in some poultry to get her to transition to some poultry.
Wellness Chicken and Herring might be something she would like.
All of these are available at most Petco's.

And the common treats are all worse than dry food. I can't get you the good treat list right now ... server errors
but freeze dried is the way to go... They have a salmon one.

I appreciate the list.... I have something called Kittty Kaviar..dried Bonito Flakes I believe..should I assume that would be ok?

yes. That's a great thing to sprinkle on top of food if they aren't interested in eating it. Crumbled kitty caviar.
I haven't tried to use it as a treat all by itself.

How is Pinky doing? How did the tests go?

Wendy

Well it appears she is good! They claim the Urinalysis was good,no ketones,no diabetes.. They think she had a UTI,being there were red and white cells found in the urine. She is eating and drinking and not vomiting anymore,,she seems like her old self again. Thanks for asking.
