New member and I need help

Hi. My cat is 5 yr old, obese and diabetic. I noticed fresh blood in her stool yesterday and took her to the emerg vet, who thinks it is gastritis. She seemed to be constipated for the past few days so maybe that's the problem. She is on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds now but I am worried about what to feed her. Her appetite is good and she isn't drinking anything other than the water that I add to her food. I was giving her Nature's Variety Instinct raw (frozen) food. (The vet had recommended the Hill's m/d stuff but I don't like the ingredients) But now I wonder if I should go back on the vet food. Advice would be appreciated!
 
Gastritis is just a name for inflammation of the GI tract. It may be caused by partial blockage, food intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, parasites, and more. You may find it helpful to do some reading on feline nutrition at Cat Info and on the feline GI tract at Feline Constipation, to help you make decisions about what you want to do.

If you decide to make any changes in what you are doing, change 1 thing at a time so you can observe if that change improved the situation or not.

Perhaps you could try a novel protein raw. Natures variety has a duck and rabit. I think I've seen venison and lamb also.
 
Hi. I have a civvie with IBD and the food that she tolerates the best is the Nature's Variety Instinct frozen raw bites. All my cats eat it, my diabetic kitty, too. They all do really well on it.

She won't eat now which is unheard of. I got her meds into her but nothing more. So I am hoping that the rest will do her good and will see how she is tomorrow. I am so worried that I have done something to harm her.
 
When the stomach is upset, not eating lets it rest. Within limits, that may be OK.
After 2-3 days, however, a vet visit is needed - after 2-3 days, the fat breakdown to provide calories can overwhelm the liver, causing hepatic lipidosis, an expensive to treat, potentially fatal condition.
 
My advice would be if she will eat something tonight, let her have a bit of what she wants. See how she is in the morning and go from there.
Is it possible that she had something today or yesterday that made her stomach upset?
LB in good shape? (nothing weird in there?)

Ok, that's good. With nsaids they need to eat - you said she was on anti-inflammitory.
Watch her for symptoms though, as some cats can have reactions to the med.

Good morning. She has eaten a little of her normal meal and is acting more normally too. So I will keep on with her medication and see how she does. Thanks to everyone for the calm advice!
