my 18-year-old kitty Hotrod has been on Lantus for about 18 months. i recently left my long-term job to start my business due to impending company closure, so began looking into cheaper Lantus vial solutions. long story short: i had success with the 25$ coupon today at Target!

i'm now poring through the instructions. i see that this pen does not have to be refrigerated. nailbite_smile is this accurate?

i'm about to administer his first dose by drawing from the stopper per the sticky i read up on in another form here. party_cat Hotrod and i thank y'all so much!

i am so sorry for asking a question already covered. this site just has so much info! and my ADHD doesn't help! but i found my answer by re-reading the sticky:

"We use U100 syringes to draw Lantus from cartridges and pens. We do NOT use needle tips which can be attached to the pens to administer insulin. Therefore, refrigeration will not alter the volume administered by the pen apparatus. Refrigeration combined with the use of syringes to draw insulin (versus using the needle tip made for the pen) from the opened pen has been found to extend it's life well beyond the 28 days suggested by the manufacturer."

thanks. tips still welcomed!

No, we do refrigerate all insulin, be it in pen or vial form. Even the Lantus pens keep longer if they are refrigerated. Although the manufacturer says not to refrigerate the pens, that is because people do use the pen needle tips to withdraw the insulin. There is positive pressure in the pen which helps to "force it out" of the pen when using the dial a dose and pen needle tips. Refrigerating the pen can affect this pressure. You will use a regular insulin syringe to withdraw the tiny doses your cat needs so no worries for you if you "chill the juice".

p.s. We use the candle icons for kitties that have passed. If you go back to your very first post in this topic and select the little Edit button over towards the right, you can change it. Click on the Post Icon radio button for none or use the question mark icon to let us know you are looking for feedback.

Around here, the only bad question is the one that goes unasked, so ask away! We don't mind repeating ourselves or pointing you to the right information or clarifying answers. Please let us know how else we might be of assistance for you. :YMHUG:
