We are new and have no idea what we are doing. We just figured out how to test her blood sugar this morning. We were not doing it correctly before administering insulin. We are a little confused as to when to test and when to feed. She has been eating every couple hours so it's hard to test her without food for 2 hours. We have taken her off dry food. We want to make sure we're doing everything to protect her health the correct way. Thank you very much

This is Jenene, I have been helping her with her cat Mama over at DCIN. Mama has just started taking Lantus (she was on NPH) and she is just now learning to test today. I believe she is on 1u.

I am trying to help Jenene figure out when to withhold food and when to test throughout the day. Perhaps one of you can explain it in another way that will help her understand. :)

Jenene, I am pinging a few excellent members who can help you get started!

Panic had given info in her post. Lantus, just switched on the 7th. I didn't know we had to test her before administering insulin. We've been doing it wrong for 10 days

Sorry about the link, I've fixed it above now.

Don't worry about "doing it wrong" in the beginning. Many of us went even longer. But you are here now, and we can help you.

Once you have been testing for a while, you can relax the guidelines not to feed for a couple hours before shot time. So that's just a couple two hour periods during the day. The rest of the time it's OK if she feeds, we have plenty of cats here who are grazers. Once you've gathered test data, or if her numbers are quite high, it's not as important to keep the food away.
