Hi! Merle is newly diagnosed and has received one weeks worth of insulin thus far. He’s been doing great other than he started peeing on the carpet upstairs (boxes are downstairs). The vet suggested putting a box upstairs, which we did and it worked but he’s now pooping on a rug downstairs (across the house from boxes). Anyone else have this issue? I have 4 boxes already- I placed a box on the rug by where he went earlier and he totally ignored it and went on the rug Again! Help!!

Welcome to FDMB. Maranda and Merle,
We are glad you found us. We hope you intend to stay.
Most Litter box "issues" such as you describe happen because Kitty is associating that littler box with pain or anxiety. There are several things you can try...although it may just be up to kitty. You've already tried the extra boxes. We do encourage more than one box especially in such situations. You can also change kitty's litter. A different litter could make the difference. There are products sold to calm a cats nerves Feliway (sp) also cleaning agents so kitty doesnt just "go" where he went last time.

If everything that could cause pain is ruled out, it largely a trial and error deal. I've never had to go through this so I'm sure there will be more suggestions. So this post will bump this thread to the top. I will also search for other ways and come back to post.

If you do intend to stay, we would like you to start here:

Have you noticed any changes in how Merle walks? Wondering if he's having trouble getting in and out of the boxes.

Did the behavior just start when you started insulin? Which insulin are you using, and at what dose? Any other changes in behavior?

hi, he’s walking fine, no trouble getting in and out. It just started, prozinc 1 unit. He’s normal other wise!

Hmmm.... that's a reasonable starting dose, but it is suspicious that it started right when the insulin did. I have a few more questions for you to try to nail this down if we can :).

1. How was the diabetes diagnosed? Was it via a fructosamine test (gets a kind of average glucose level over a couple weeks) or was it just a single blood glucose reading at the vet?

2. Would you be willing to learn to test blood glucose at home? It's the best way to monitor how the insulin treatment is going and keep Merle safe. We are big advocates of home testing here, and have lots of tips and tricks to help you get started!

3. (very important) Let's just try to double-check the insulin dosage if we can. Could you take a picture of one of your insulin syringes, with the plunger pulled up to the place where you usually do it to dose 1U?

Hope we can figure this out-- peeing and pooping all over the place is not good, for anyone  :stop:!

It was a single blood glucose reading at the vet. He was 603. I’m picking up the items needed for home testing after work today!
