UPDATE & more questions: Have a first time appointment with "The Cat Doctor", which is located in the Third Ward. Receptionist over the phone said they are actually waiting on a shipment order for FreeStyle Libres, and that they do advocate for at home glucose monitoring. I'm still weary, but I am glad that they are advocates for at home monitoring.

Some general questions, as my mother back in IL currently has my boy as I set up for him to return, we've been taking glucose measurements almost 4 times throughout the day (missed a test one day because of hectic schedule). He's been given ProZinc, and we're seeing numbers fluctuate from 157 to low 500's.

I'm still so very new to this, and I'm reading as much as I can, but I can not seem to find a general "This is what an average swing in sugars should look like after eating, etc." Does anyone have any advice or a link I can refer to for finding "average" swings in glucose and or dosing appropriate U's for those levels? I'm scared to send my sugarbaby into hypo.
[Mother currently has that Karo corn syrup incase, and I will too soon.]

Still trying to figure out the recommended spreadsheet for myself, the link to the current levels and test times are here from a quick spreadsheet my mother has made while she has Rasputin in her care:

Hello all,

My name is Jade, and my darling ESA companion, Rasputin [M, 13] (also goes by Bub) was dx'd yesterday by our vet that I've been attending since I was 7 years old. I live in Milwaukee, WI and my old vet is two hours away. I was already suspect of him being diabetic once he started excessively drinking water but was hoping against it. Since then I've been on this website (and linked websites from here) about it until midnight and immediately back on here at 6am this morning.

I'm trying to find a local vet I can take him to that won't fight me terribly hard (or at all) for figuring the right treatment. Rasputin was a whole magnitude higher than what his levels should be (500+), so I wanted to get the Free-Libre to help figure out where his daily levels are standing as we start treatment and diet change. I know being able to prick and test is valuable as well, so I won't be without those.

The reason I've lived in MKE for two years without finding a vet is because years and years ago, my mother and I lost an animal due to a vet's malpractice and we've been scarred since that loss. I'm absolutely terrified of finding a new vet that is going to be trustworthy and value my observations.

I scheduled with a local vet called "The Cat Doctor", and I happily came off the phone being given the knowledge that they're currently ordering Free-Libre's, but then I looked more into their negative reviews and a few are fairly recent and now have me worried and concerned that I'll be yanked around and bullied into tests I don't need and the worst imaginable, harmful for my lovely boy, Rasputin. Is there anyone that is near Milwaukee that has a good relationship with their vet and their fur-babies diabetic condition? I'm willing and able to drive, but preferably not beyond 30 minutes for potential emergencies.

(Also, any product suggestions for a meat grinder would be appreciated! I'm going to be placing him on wet food immediately, but I want to move onto homemade meals as outlined in many threads I've read the past hours!)

Thank you for your time, it's been eye-opening being here the past 24 hours.

Welcome! I'm from Milwaukee too and used to have a GREAT vet who, while not agreeing with all my decisions regarding dosing and Quincy's care, respected it and thought I was doing a great job. BUT she then retired and handed me off to another doctor in the practice. She, too, does not agree with testing so much and I barely test a lot as it is. She also doesn't really like that I give .25 increment increases, though she hasn't said that, it was in her tone of voice. Otherwise, I am happy and I can give you the name if you're interested. I'm interested in following this thread and seeing if anyone else has a place to recommend! :)

Thank you so much for replying! I'm sorry that the vet you had retired! The vet we have/had is thinking about retiring soon. We've been with them so long that we even got to see their building be entirely renovated!

I hope someone comes along an shares a more agreeable vet for the both of us, as it can get tiring being disapproved of when you're trying to do your best after careful and timely effort to learn how to best handle a problem!

My mother has an Australian Shepherd that she's since moved onto feeding a homemade diet and she spent about month looking into it. Thankfully our vet was impressed and encouraging and even asked for the references used.

Fingers crossed!

I completely agree. It's like come on, can't I get some support? I'm doing the best I can! That's awesome that your vet was encouraging about the diet for your mom's Australian Shepherd. We need more vets like that!

Updated post, but just in-case you don't get notified of that: I have an appointment with "The Cat Doctor" in the Third Ward and they advocate for at home glucose monitoring and testing and are even getting shipments of FreeStyle Libres in. I can update you on how I felt after the visit on February 1st, if you'd like?

Thanks, I didn't see the updated post. I just read it and my boy has been swinging all over the place too. I have no idea what's been going on. I don't want to increase because he DID get a low number on this dose so I'm worried if I increase it will make him hypoglycemic. So I don't know! So frustrating. As for your appt, yes, I'd love to know how it goes and what their general thoughts are on home testing and increasing the dose on our own without the guidance of the vet.

We live in Green Bay and have both a specialty vet and general practice vet clinic that are awesome in Appleton which I know is not exactly local to MKE. Let me know if you want their names.
