Just had Snowcone diagnosed as diabetes and am just getting started. Am apprehensive about using the lancet, using the test strips, and everything. Vet started me on U40 syringes and ProZinc insulin. Any comments or help would be appreciated.

Welcome to FDMB, the best place you never wanted to be.

There are 4 things you'll need to manage your kitty's diabetes:
- You - without your commitment, the following won't work.
- Low carb over the counter canned or raw diet, such as many Friskies pates. See Cat Info for more info. If already on insulin, you must be home testing before changing the diet.
- A long-lasting insulin such as ProZinc, Lantus, BCP PZI, or Levemir, which you have
- And home blood glucose monitoring with an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart Relion Confirm or Target Up and Up (the pet ones will break your budget!).

It can be scary at first but you will soon settle into a routine. I remember shaking so bad at my first shot I almost cried at the vet's office.

I got my cat started on Prozinc about a month ago and I was very overwhelmed and I am terrified of needles, it becomes easier the more you do it.
I am home testing every day prior to a shot. She is on 1.5 units twice daily and my numbers are all over the place. The symptoms of frequent urination and thirst are gone however the blood glucose numbers are not where I would like them to be most of the time, they are all over the place. The day starts of at about 460 and goes down to 300 at nadir and some mornings she will be close to normal range that i have to skip a dose or reduce is significantly. What has your experience been like so far?
