We have just learned Missy's sugar was elevated it was 415 when I brought her in suspecting a UTI. She had been sitting on carpet peeing when cleaning paws after eating and would get up from a puddle.it also happened after she was rolling and rubbing on catnip toys, PD/PU to a degree, think noticed as she likes drinking from bathroom sink, and with arthritis can't jump but needs maid service.

Started on Hills M/D canned and dry, used to having dry out for grazing, canned twice a day.
I am seriously scared silly for my baby, have had her since kitten hood know can't have her forever but...

Have to go out of town overnight end of week so vet said not to start insulin until I can do consistently. She's never been boarded, so that would also be stressed. He recommended stopping her Prednisolone (2.5 mg 3x/ week but i am going to titrate)

Glad found this place, and was very glad to see could use other canned foods besides Hills and Purina. Missy also likes freeze dried raw, waiting to find as is nutrition of Stella and Chewy's.

Please bear with typos :?

Hi Purrson and Missy

You wrote that you feed both wet m/d food and dry m/d foof.

What you should do is take away the dry entire and only feed her the wet food. It is all about carbs here and dry food contains so much carbs that that is why the bg is higher than wet food.

I feed mime wet food only, and he is a free feder, so I gíve him 1/2 in the morning, 1/2 can in the afternoon, and 1 can for the night. It is working very well.

I agree that you could take this week before puss starts on insulin to change her diet. You have to be more careful with diet changes after they go on insulin you see, because diet can change a cat's insulin needs so dramatically. So you either change diet before starting insulin, like you have the opportunity now, or you change their diet later, AFTER you have learnt home testing.
(I'd learn home testing anyway)
I got my cat's diabetes under control by changing his diet to ordinary cat foods that were under 7% calories from carbs. That means no dry crunchies, and careful choices with canned food (or raw food, there is a link to info about that at the first link below).
It sounds like you are reading around the site, which is the way to go. Here are some links about food

if you are in the US this will help, look for the individual flavours that are under 7% calories from carbs.

If you are in Australia, I can sling you a list of Australian canned foods that are alright.

Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw for cats is fine for diabetic cats  There's nothing in there that would raise blood glucose levels. http://www.stellaandchewys.com/cat-products.php If you serve it as a meal, it is recommended that you rehydrate the food so that your cat gets adequate water intake. The food is pricey, though, so unless you have a bottomless wallet, it may not be ideal to feed as the main food.

You could do a mix of low carb canned food and raw. Or just feed low carb canned and keep the freeze dried raw as treats

To find low carb canned foods use Binky's charts, the Pet Food Nutritional Values list, Dr. Lynne's Wet Food list, and the list of low carb gluten free Fancy Feast

On Binky's charts, stick with foods that have a number 10 or less in the carbs colum. On the Pet Food Nutritional Values Chart, look at the %kcal from carbs column and choose foods that have a number 10 or less.

Popular brands of low carb canned foods are Fancy Feast, Wellness, Merrick, Nature's Variety Instinct, Special Kitty, Friskies. Feed your cat whatever brand of food he like to eats and you can afford.

Since your cat isn't on insulin yet, you can change the diet from the prescription junk to low carb canned. If you do this after your cat is on insulin, you would have to monitor blood glucose levels closely because a diet change can lower blood glucose levels a lot. You can return the prescription food to the vet.

How long has your cat been on Presnisolone and what for? Steroid use can induce temporary diabetes in some cats. Once the steroid is stopped, the diabetes symptoms go away and blood glucose levels drop back to normal levels.

Squeem thank you for commenting on the Stella' and chewy's was coming to post link http://www.stellaandchewys.com/dog-driedchicken.php she's been on Prednisolone 2.5 three times a week for years since '04 I think maybe later, I have stress exacerbated excema and when it was bad wasn't sleeping well at all waking to find had been catching all night, started using a tea tree oil based cream on me, naturally not her... But when you have a Velcro cat whom sleeps on your head even. (or did, hasn't for a while think cause of arthritis) I also give her Aloe Vera Juice in her food, for her liver. When googling it recently to share with a friend learned its good for kidney function too.

Anne and akbahsmum I can try removing the dry but figured lower carb md would be better, lower then other drys, she's also always been a grazer. She's also on amidopine for her blood pressure morning and night. We periodically make runs to my sister just overnight since on meds but another reason reluctant to even try insulin. Hypo page didn't help my panic lol. :o
Have to do more looking in that area. Good news is she seems happy with the hills though I am not
Appreciate support, will look and reply more when back from errand.

The Stella and Chewy freeze dried raw is fine for treats  I used to fee those as treats to my diabetic. Stella and Chewy does have a freeze dried cat food now. I think they also make freeze dried meat treats.

Canned food can be left out all day for your diabetic cat. Most people used a timed feeder. Fill the compartments with canned food, set the timer for the times you want your cat to eat, and go about your day :-D

While kind of low in carbs, the M/D dry food has prety junky ingredients :-Q If your cat will eat canned food there is no reason to feed any dry food, IMO. There are some better quality low carb commerical dry foods you can feed if needed: Innova EVO, Wellness Core, Nature's Variety Instinct. Keep in mind that even a little dry food can keep your cat's blood glucose levels too high. Some diabetic cats are really carb sensitive.

Hills is known to have junk ingredients. Fact I paid for and brought it home says what kind of shock I was in.

Yes Stella and Chewy's has freeze dried cat foods too but price wise figured the dog version was less expensive then same price smaller bags smaller bits cat food. We don't go out of town leaving her with just dry often, but sometimes. Also have been using Fortiflora for her, should that be cut too?
Dry usually use brands like instinct, have box of lamb instinct freeze dried too haven't used yet. Off for next appt.

Back, edited to ask why would you use Stella and Chewy's freeze dried just as treats carb wise or cost wise? Ask because Missy loves her rehydrated half patty per day.

Reply from Stella and Chewie
Good afternoon Cheryl,

Thank you for your interest in Stella & Chewy's.  I'll do my best to answer your questions!

Our diets tend to be an excellent form of nutrition for diabetic animals as they don't have any added sugar and are very low in carbohydrates.  Our dinners for dogs contain only 5% fruits and vegetables--which are the only source of carbs in the diet.  The dinners for cats do not have any fruits and vegetables, so don't have any carbs.

Tocopherols are simply natural antioxidants which help preserve the food.  These are completely safe to be fed to animals and are used sparingly in our fomulations.

It seems, from your email, that you're looking for some specific nutritional values, but I wasn't quite clear on which values you needed.  If you have specific nutrients you would like numbers for, please let me know.

I hope this helps to answer your questions--please let me know if you have any others or if I can offer any further clarification.

Have a great day,

Be better choice then hills?? as used that in past and she's liked it, tend to rotate better dry and canned foods

Additional question regarding bowel pattern specifically pooping outside the box, is it related to diabetes or totally unrelated?? I am not talking about a piece that stuck or fell out by the box, I am talking about a full large poop in the living room no where near the box, if that could be related. She's never done it before. Happened Saturday, she had not gone for a few and I had been giving her laxatone a few days and Saturday she had a huge poop in the living room, found it when I got up so do not know her posture or behavior. Thankfully well formed

Today Mom said she did it again, found in living room, but also had pooped a few times in the box, not sure if stuck to her or separate time. If related to Diabetes does that stop after its controlled? Before Saturday she never did this
Apologies fr asking so many questions really struggling with acceptance and understanding here.
