my cat toes was diagnosed 2 weeks ago he is 15 years old and has been on vetsulin 1 unit 2 times a day. We are doing our first blood glucose curve this weekend fingers crossed. my vet said it would be okay to let him snack. i am a stay at home mom so would it be okay to give him like half a can fancy feast as like a lunch for snacking he said i could just put the hard cat food down which my other cat loves but i am trying to do what's best for both of them. my non-DB cat wont eat a whole can in a sitting, im stressing his not getting enough although no noticeable weight-loss would it be bad to let them snack on dry sense my other cat eats it better. Also what deepth setting should i use one my lance that cam with my alpha track do i just start low go higher? Thank you sorry for all the questions lol

Welcome! I’m only familiar with ProZinc so I can’t help with feeding times around curves. I would imagine snacking close to a check would falsely inflate your glucose higher.

I have transitioned my crew to all wet food and I spread 2.5-3 cans between them 3 times a day. I have 3 cats. If Max was going lower than normal at +2 - +5, I would always give a tsp of food. I have found that by removing dry, it made a difference of around 100 points lower on his BG.

I don’t use the lancet device, I just manually pierce his ear. I felt the sound may spook him.

Thank you yeah maybe I'll call the vet but he said snacking wouldn't hurt so ill ask about our cruve if he can have a snack mid day sense i have never done a curve yet.

Your plan sounds fine....it's actually easier on the pancreas to deal with multiple small meals instead of 2 big ones anyway.

The only time we really don't want them to eat is the 2 hours immediately before shot times so that when you test, you get a number that's not influenced by food. The rest of the cycle, you can feed small mini-meals at any point (but usually with Vetsulin, it's best to keep most of the food in the front half of the cycle)

You don't want to have kibble in the picture at all. It's too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. Most of us switched all our cats to low carb canned when we learned how bad kibble was for cats.....and didn't want to risk having a 2nd diabetic cat!

Welcome! I use the lancing device that came with the alphatrak. I currently use it on #2.5, having started at the highest setting #5! I personally find it way easier to use the lancet device than to freehand it with the lancet. My kitty prefers me to use the device also. But you need to try and see what works best for you. As NoahFL pointed out, the lancing device does make a noise. I give treats when I test, and my kitty ignores the noise.

I got an alphatrak because my vet made me, but I only use it for the curves I send to the vet. I otherwise use a human blood glucose monitor, as do most people on the forum (but not everyone) and would recommend you do the same. The test strips for human monitors are much less expensive. And most of the advice and materials and protocols on the forum are based on human blood glucose numbers.

If you are going to be asking for advice here, you should set up a signature and a spreadsheet. Itis very difficult for people to give advice without seeing your kitty’s blood glucose numbers. Start clicking on some of the other members’ spreadsheets so you can get a feel for them. Here is the link so you can set up your own: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

and the signature setup instructions are here, along with some great introductory information: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/new-how-you-can-help-us-help-you.216696/

That’s all I can think of for right now! I’m sure others will say if I missed anything. So stay tuned for more. :)

BTW Krista? is it? Please take advantage of this info to set up your signature and spreadsheet
The signature is so experts can see at a glance all the pertinent information like, insulin type, meter being used, food kitty eats...all these things are important as it pertains to guidance.

The spread sheet speaks for itself.

Your avatar kitteths are adorable:bighug:
I suspect Toes has the white...well... toes. :p

What treats do you recommend for a diabetic cat.

Any single protein meat only is a great treat. You can buy them as freeze dried (cheaper for the bigger bag in the dog section), or just boil or roast a chicken breast and cut up small pieces. I've seen special treats from a bit of steak to prawns, no seasoning.

With Vetsulin, you do want to make sure he eats a decent amount before his shot. Good luck with the curve.

Thank you for the tip he was always a thin cat at his heaviest 10 pounds his a large thin cat but now only weighs 8 so my vet said my goal should be weight gaining eating before the vetsulin has been easy he eats 1-1/2 cans fancy feast every time im Giving him a half a can at lunch then anothe 1-1/2 cans at his second dosing both vets were very shocked he was diabetic both suspected thyroid sense he was always thin with a crazy appetite before he got sickly thin me and my husband use to joke he burns calories eating lol. The curve has been easier then i thought so far so good.
