Jester and I went to the vet today to see how he's doing.

It's been a particularly stressful week - between all the worries about Bastian (my civvie that may have a tumor in his mouth), being unemployed and running out of money, and extra concerns over Jester.

While his numbers were pretty good at his last checkup, it's been very difficult to get him to eat more than two cans of FF daily. Plus he looked like he was losing weight again. On top of that, I've been having problems finding a section of skin to give him his shots.

I've been reluctant to start checking his BG - mostly because I've been so stressed out. (And I had a melt down Friday morning when Jester wouldn't eat anything at all for nearly an hour - finally got him to eat when I gave him some of his old Friskies with gravy.)

But this morning I was a bit relieved when he ate nearly whole can of FF between two feedings.

So at the vet's today, they weighed him. Sure enough, he's lost weight - back down to almost where he was when he was first diagnosed.

And his BG was down to freakin' 51!

Out came the sugar water - two fat syringes that they got most of into him. I was told no insulin at all tonight or even tomorrow morning. And the dosage will go down to 1U with another visit this Friday.

I even got permission to feed him the higher carb Friskies mixed in with the FF.

The vet told me that, after Jester started back on insulin to watch his eyes - if they're dilated, no insulin. But that seems a bit precarious. And it really is time for me to teach myself how to test Jester myself. It's so scary how low his BG was at that visit. And now I know why he wasn't feeling like eating.

btw, When I told the vet you folks all test your cats using human meters, he was a little surprised - then asked if there's a conversion. I think I should give him the url for this site. *g*

Testing at home is definitely the safest way and less expensive then vet visits. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC.

The vet gave me an amazing gift the first day I took Jester in. He didn't charge me a cent for anything that day and, while they tell me how much each visit costs, I only pay what I can afford. If I can't afford anything, I pay nothing.

That said, if I had been testing Jester myself over the last two weeks, I would have known that his BG was so low and I could have told the vet's office myself.

btw, one of the techs told me that a few of the other kitty moms do their own testing and send their spreadsheets via email. I'd love to know which of the members of this group go there!

What a wonderful Vet! Truly someone in it for the love and care of animals and not for the money. That makes my heart happy :cat:
