Merianne, I lancet freehand as well. I usually test Genghis as soon as I put food down for her - it's a good distraction! Initially I just started by playing with her ears a bit, and she's really good about it. The more you do it, the easier it becomes - trust me! Another tip - when I first started out, I would actually put Band-Aids on my thumb and fingers to brace her ear. Remember that a lancet has an angle, or bevel -- turn it so that the pointy end angled for the tip to enter first --- argh, I'm not explaining this very well. I need to find the post about it. Anyway, hold the lancet very loosely (in case kitty bolts, then you won't rip the ear) and poke deftly and swiftly - you will get a feel for it but the Band Aid will protect you and keep you from being hesitant until you get better at it. Worked for me!
