I had taken in a feral boy cat back in 2017. He was very wild that we had to keep him separated from the other cats. He has gotten better but not completely friendly where I can pick him up. The problem is 3 or 4 months ago I noticed his back legs seemed weaker. I was going through a hard time with my husband because he was sick and couldn’t help our cat right away. I found out later he has diabetes. The problem is there’s no way for me to give him shots. He’s not that friendly for me to be able to do that.

What I’ve done so far is pulled his dry food and I’m giving him canned food with lower carbohydrates. He gets an occasional treat, though. I also bought some drops from pet wellbeing to mix in his food to try and help the diabetes. He’s been eating that okay so far. He’s been on zobaline for 2 weeks now to help his hind legs. No improvement yet, though. I also give him probiotics because he has problems with mushy poop. Fortiflora hasn't helped that so i just started using florastor today. Another problem that started happening recently is he’s peeing on the rug. When he does go in the litter box or pees on the rug, he just sits down while he goes because of his bad legs. So his butt and legs get stuff stuck on them. I try to wipe what I can but he’s not good about that either. But I see he has sores on his butt/tail area because of this.

I’m just looking for ideas on how to help him more. If there’s anything I can try to put on his butt to help the sores? I was able to trick him to get him to the vet to get tested for diabetes but I don’t know if I’ll be able to catch him again. Plus I’m struggling financially too.

Will he let you pet him while he is eating? If so you may be able to give him insulin. With him being semi feral home testing will probably be difficult if not impossible. However most cats don't even notice the insulin shots while they are eating. You would gently lift his skin and insert the needle quickly.

I think that could be iffy. He can get very jumpy and not trust me at times. He still will hiss at me too so it's hard to say if that would work out while he eats. I was hoping the way i'm doing things now would help him but i'm not seeing any improvement and with him peeing on the rug and having sores now, i'm really worried. The house is pretty smelly because of the loose stools and that i can't clean him enough so it's getting on things around the house. I just feel terrible that i can't do enough. It's just been such a stressful year.

I'm hoping there's something i can try to put on his sore butt area to help him but he does lick that area a lot. So it would have to be something safe for him to lick.

Hi and welcome.
I can’t help with the butt sores I am sorry.have you taken him to the vet for them?
If changing the food to a low carb diet has not helped, there is not really anything you can do but give insulin. is there anyone who could help you with giving the injections.
They are not hard to give any can be given quickly. .you can do it while he is eating….would that help?
If he is left without insulin, he will die a slow death.

My parents got a semi-feral rescue and the Feliway air freshener things really seemed to help calm him and make him feel at home.
Also it might help to replace his treats with a lo-carb option like freeze dried chicken bites.
You’re doing great and he’s lucky to have you. <3

Could you call the vet and ask for some ointment rather than bringing him in.

You can also try Chewys, if you are in the US , and search for cat safe ointment. Would puppy training pads on your floor help. Also getting a litter box with lower walls so it is easier for him to get in.
