So I have fed Bear on a food schedule because he eats so much if I leave it out. The vet recommended leaving food out so that he can eat freely, and hopefully avoid getting low and then having a big spike when he eats. I've now switched to wet food and have tried to leave it out during the day, but either he eats it all, or it seems to dry out and get pretty gross. Should I just keep him on his food schedule? If it is better for him to eat throughout the day, is there a dry food I can leave out during the day that won't cause him harm? Thanks for answering all my questions, there will probably be much more to come :bookworm::nailbiting:

In my experience, which is limited because I only have one cat, Radar seems to do best when we feed him every few hours. When I can't be home or when I'm sleeping I provide "pucks" of frozen cat food which keep pretty well without getting dried up and yucky. I bought silicone mini muffin baking forms and I just mix up cat food with water to a nice consistency and put it in the muffin pan. Then it goes in the freezer for a few hours and is ready. I also have a timed feeder with a place for freezer gel packs that also helps keep the pucks in good shape for later eating. I hope this is helpful.

:)Dottie does better in grazing mode, too, Jan. If I force her to eat she shuts down, and I think her tiny little gummy mouth gets tired of trying to shovel in a large amount of food at one time...she refuses to do it. She's fastidious, and hates all the spillage that comes from having no teeth, and stops constantly to wipe her face.

Walmart has some nice, square mini forms for ice. They hold exactly .9 fluid ounces each segment, but to keep your pucks from expanding over the edges, they would be excellent for half-ounce pucks, too.. I found them hanging on an end cap back by the dishes and kitchen supplies. These ice trays come in various colors, which is nice if you want to freeze specific flavors of foods. I use them a lot for tuna water.

I have weird-o cats they seem to like half dried out wet as much as fresh from the can so I just leave it for grazing even if it looks ugly.

I use a Petsafe 5 timed feeder to dispense Saoirse's night time feeds. She's on wet food. I add a tablespoonful of water to each feed (or an ice cube in the summer) and it keeps the food plenty moist until it's ready to be served. Saoirse gets a meal every 2 hours at night so the fourth feed will be in the tray for 8 hours before it's served to her and it's fine (and would continue to be so for several hours more, temperature permitting).

are you on tight reg or so slow??
if on go slow there is a 0 digestible carb food called young again 0 carb
my non diabetic cat eats it as my diabetic is on tight reg (wet only)-is expensive and very high calorie
