Hello!
Two weeks ago my cat was diagnosed with diabetes after I took her in for increased urination. She had a UTI and elevated blood glucose. We think the diabetes was brought on by her being on predisone for her IBD, she is no longer on the predisone. However, now that I have this diagnosis I have ALOT of questions.
With some difficulty at first I was able to switch her from dry food to wet food (fancy feast or friskies pates). When I first came home with her the vet instructed me to give 1 unit every 12 hours. I purchased a cheap glucose meter from the store (true metrix) and test her before I give her insulin and a few hours after to make sure she doesn't go too low.
When I first started giving her insulin the vet wanted me to give her 1 unit but it would bring her down from 323mg/dl to around 40 mg/dl which freaked me out! So I have been adjusting the insulin myself very slowly. She is now on about 1/4 a unit every 12 hours, however she hovers around 130mg/dl alot of the time and I just dont know if I should give her more to bump her down to a better range, I am worried she will drop too low because she is already in the kinda lowish area. Does anyone have any experience with how much insulin to give when using ProZinc at this level?
Also could you guys recommend any better glucose meters? The vet wanted me to get a very expensive pet specific one, but I just can't afford it unfortunately. I read that alot of people on here use relion, but then I also heard it was being discontinued? I just would like something accurate that won't completely break my very small bank.
Sorry for the long post.... this diagnosis is like a complicated puzzle. Thanks for any help/advice!
