Hi all:

My 10 year-old kitty was just diagnosed with diabetes last night. After the initial I'm-a-bad-parent feeling kind of wore off, I started doing some additional research. My vet gave me Purina DM for him, but I keep reading that you shouldn't give a diabetic cat high carb dry food, and that Purina DM still has too many carbs. I've also been reading that there are cheaper brands that work just as well that you can get from the regular store. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Welcome!

Yes, we like wet lo carb food. We try to feed under 10% carbs. Check out this food chart: Janet and Binky’s chart Lots of us feed Fancy Feast, Merrick, Wellness or Friskies - what you can afford and what your kitty will eat. Don't feel guilty. We fed our Oliver Science Diet lite dry for years, wondering why he would never lose weight.......

BUT do not change the food unless you are on a low dose of insulin - 1 unit or under twice daily - and planning to learn to home test. When we changed Oliver from dry to wet, his numbers went down 100 points overnight. If we hadn't been testing and just had given our usual dose, he would have hypoed.
