Hi - my cat was diagnosed last night/today & started on Lantus 1 unit twice a day. He’s been sleeping all day while I was at work, didn’t eat anything. A few bites this morning before the vet appt. Now only a few bites at dinner, probably 2 ozs. I don’t have a glucometer yet. I gave his shot and he’s lying down. He raised his head when he heard a bird. But he’s back down. I’m so scared. Did I do it right? Should I have given his shot when he didn’t eat much? His glucose this morning at the vet was 380.

Did your vet mention if there were ketones? When my cats do want to eat I try baby food such as Gerber’s 100% baby food. It usually easy to syringe feed if needed and you can get syringes in the baby section of many grocery stores or at pet stores. It is extremely important to get some food into kitty. Maybe try plain baked chicken. Are you feeding canned food? If your fry had you get diabetic food the bus not st all necessary and kitty might not like it. Any wet food is good for not if pate style but feed whatever you can.
Thank you for the suggestions. I’ll try the baby food. I think from the urgent vet last night and regular vet today, he’s tired. He’s awake now. Was sleeping after the shot about 3 hrs ago. It’s just a lot right now.

You will get lots of support here. Are you testing his bg? We strongly suggest testing before every shot. Then feed a little and if he eats and the bg is at a safe level you then give the insulin. If he won’t eat you need to stall and test again in about a half hour and see if he will eat. If the bg is under 200 while new to insulin you don’t want to give it unless it comes up on its own without food. I’m going to give you a link to read so we can help you better.

Thank you for the link. I feel better about it today. Yesterday was a lot of information and shock. He acted better this morning. Ate some breakfast, not a lot, but some. I gave the insulin, then he ate some more. I'm getting the glucometer today and will learn how to do that. LOL......I'm a type 2 diabetic and a nurse so I don't know why this is so shocking for me...............probably because it's my baby-cat

it is very important to test before each shot, to avoid hypoglycemia, most members use the ReliOn Premier human monitor and strips, ( Walmart,) or any human monitor no need for a pet meter that the strips will cost you $1.00 each, the ReliOn is just as accurate, and since you ae a diabetic yourself, you can use your monitor just the same, if you wish to do so, and the rules are the same feed several small snack or meals during the day and test before shot, 2 hours after shot as well as a couple test during the day
