new diabetic cat study

I apologize if this has already been posted on this forum, but my facebook feed just now posted info about a new diabetic cat clinical trial using oral medication (doesn't say what the oral medication is). Murphy doesn't fit the inclusion criteria, but I thought I'd post the website. Although even if Murphy did fit the study criteria, not sure I would chance switching. Would be great if it worked though It's an FDA regulated trial. There apparently are 20 vet practices around the country participating - you can enter your zip code and it will tell you if there is a trial site near you. It looks like the study is being conducted in vet offices as opposed to vet schools - at least the site in Chicago is a veterinary practice

I was a bit concerned they did not talk about testing for ketones at all or doing any home testing. If the cat only goes in to see the trial vet every so often and if the tablets are not working, the cat could develop ketones for remaining vertically untreated.. and we all know how the BSLs are raised during vet visits.. If they had said they were going to test for ketones at home and do home testing I would have been more impressed.
It would be great if it worked but I'm not sure I like the way they are conducting the trial......just my opinion.

Eh... but cat's BSL change all the time. One dose of medication doesn't give much room for adjustment.

But I guess that's what studies are for!

But most vets do not instruct those for insulin. I really see nothing out of the normal for the study not saying anything. One can always test BG like many do today.
The initial screening study is only 30 days while phase 2 is ~150 days and requires 5 visits. So really nothing special compared to a lot of diabetic cats whose caretakers do not home test.
I would enroll one of my cats but none of the "investigators" are close enough.

What I meant Larry was that if the tablets were not working, the cat would not be having any help for the FD and would be very prone to ketones which were not being monitored @Larry and Kitties

ugh - I know about traffic I can take up to an hour to travel 5-6 miles along Lake Shore Drive

Maybe I'm just selfish here, but M'row (recently diagnosed) is doing so well with Lantus/home monitoring, and he was so sick and miserable less than a month ago. Suppose this study drug doesn't work for him? I think we won't participate; just can't do anything that might not B in his best interest.
