Hey new here looking for some guidance. I adopted a senior kitty a year ago from the animal shelter. She’s 11 years old now. She has lots respitory issues she was found as a stray severely matted malnourished had lot of dental work done on her before I got her.

Anyway I had a diabetic cat in the past and noticed she looked real malnourished loosing weight not cleaning self then she began peeing right next to her food dishes. I have an alpha trac 2 so I checked her sugar was 580. She was on half can fancy feast pate or shreds twice a day with free standing purina cat chow. I was trying save money with dry food and was her diet at the shelter.

So I immediately began feeding her only the pate fancy feast now 1 can the 3oz twice a day and the vet had me start humulin N Nph 2u twice a day with her meals. After just 1 week I got her sugars to finally drop below 200 and if below 250 I wouldn’t give insulin. She’s been off the insulin since 8/26. On 8/30 I checked her sugar before her night feeding and it was 50. She had thrown up bit I think she vomited cause sugar dropped not that the vomiting caused low blood sugar.
She was acting her normal self just hungry and irritable cause she was hungry. Gave her the can pate them checked again after an hour and still 50. Once again acting normal. I was worried about seizures passing out but she seemed fine. So caved I gave her some crunches and little bit Karo syrup waited an hour still 50 then gave her a couple lickable treats and got her up to 77. Next morning ... sugar 580! I still didn’t give her insulin. And by evening meal she was around 250 and her readings over next several days 130s so I stopped checking every day.

tonight just random check to make sure not increasing. 50! Once again acting normal just hungry. Gave her her can pate and added small amount of crunchies and resisting urge to feed her syrup snacks and more crunchies or risk it skyrocketing.

She’s not on any insulin at all since 8/26z This specific vet isn’t open till Tuesday so I do plan to call and ask what they suggest.

just curious others experience. Am I not feeding her enough? I work 12 hour shifts so I usually fed her around 11am and 1am. I thought she probably needs a feeding in the middle of the day bit just not doable with wet food. I’ll see how she does with some crunchies mixed in but I was trying stay away from them. I kind-of dont want give more than a can dont want her vomiting. If the crunchies spike her I was gonna try 1.5 cans pate twice a day. She was up to 9lbs and getting a belly and went to 7.8lbs with the diabetes and she feels like she’s plumping up again but dint have an exact weight.

She’s doing great with the lower glucose levels. Coat cleaner she’s grooming better no longer litter stuck everywhere stopped peeing next to her dishes acting like a kitten jumping up into counters she couldn’t do before.

You did great with recognizing your cat was diabetic!!

I have a couple of thoughts about what you're seeing.

NPH/Humulin N is a fast acting insulin that can drop numbers fast and hard. We tend too look at numbers based on a human meter. The AlphaTrack meters are calibrated to run higher than a human meter. The Lantus dosing protocol notes that a 50 on a human meter is roughly the equivalent to a 68 on an AlphaTrack. So, you're reading of 50 is in a concerningly low blood glucose range. That said, using higher carb food was a very good idea! When a cat drops into those kinds of low numbers, one possible outcome is that it "shocks" their pancreas into working. That may be what's happened.

What I would strongly suggest is that you get rid of any of the dry food. Once a cat is in remission or flirting with remission, the diabetes hasn't been "cured." Your cat becomes a diet controlled diabetic. The dry food is high in carbohydrates and can push your cat out of remission or regulation. There are only a few dry foods that are low in carbohydrates (Young Again Zero Carb, Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein, and one other I'm not remembering) and they are expensive.

If your cat is hungry and isn't gaining weight to the point of becoming overly "fluffy", it's fine to provide more food. You may want to consider a timed feeder so you can program when food is available. Another option is to mix canned food with water until it's soupy and freeze the food (ice trays work great) into "catsickles" that you can leave out when you're at work or overnight while you're sleeping.

If it's possible, for you to do a curve (testing every 2 hours for a 12 hour cycle)? A curve may give you more information about what's happening with your cat's numbers. It sounds like you're testing infrequently so it's hard to know what the highs and lows may be.

Her sugar today was 136 so I really don’t want to introduce the crunchies back. Gonna try 1.5 cans twice a day. I forget the fancy feast are small cans. My other cats won’t eat a full can in one sitting bit she will. I do leave two tiny bowl crunchies maybe 1/2 cup each up high for the others around the house that she can’t get. Now that I think about it when I do the low carb even my other kitties were in the 80 range and ok. Just didn’t like 50

50 for a cat not getting insulin is a great number. That is in the range for a non-diabetic cat. No need to panic. Instead celebrate for a great number.

thanks I was so confused cause other than bugging me for food she was acting normal. I was just saying when I do the low carb even my no diabetic cats are in 70-80 range.

My diet controlled diabetic gets sugars starting to creep up when she gets hungry, can you feed her more often throughout the day (and night) instead of just twice a day? That may help keep her more even throughout

I’d have to get the automatic feeder if I do while at work.
