Hey new here looking for some guidance. I adopted a senior kitty a year ago from the animal shelter. She’s 11 years old now. She has lots respitory issues she was found as a stray severely matted malnourished had lot of dental work done on her before I got her.
Anyway I had a diabetic cat in the past and noticed she looked real malnourished loosing weight not cleaning self then she began peeing right next to her food dishes. I have an alpha trac 2 so I checked her sugar was 580. She was on half can fancy feast pate or shreds twice a day with free standing purina cat chow. I was trying save money with dry food and was her diet at the shelter.
So I immediately began feeding her only the pate fancy feast now 1 can the 3oz twice a day and the vet had me start humulin N Nph 2u twice a day with her meals. After just 1 week I got her sugars to finally drop below 200 and if below 250 I wouldn’t give insulin. She’s been off the insulin since 8/26. On 8/30 I checked her sugar before her night feeding and it was 50. She had thrown up bit I think she vomited cause sugar dropped not that the vomiting caused low blood sugar.
She was acting her normal self just hungry and irritable cause she was hungry. Gave her the can pate them checked again after an hour and still 50. Once again acting normal. I was worried about seizures passing out but she seemed fine. So caved I gave her some crunches and little bit Karo syrup waited an hour still 50 then gave her a couple lickable treats and got her up to 77. Next morning ... sugar 580! I still didn’t give her insulin. And by evening meal she was around 250 and her readings over next several days 130s so I stopped checking every day.
tonight just random check to make sure not increasing. 50! Once again acting normal just hungry. Gave her her can pate and added small amount of crunchies and resisting urge to feed her syrup snacks and more crunchies or risk it skyrocketing.
She’s not on any insulin at all since 8/26z This specific vet isn’t open till Tuesday so I do plan to call and ask what they suggest.
just curious others experience. Am I not feeding her enough? I work 12 hour shifts so I usually fed her around 11am and 1am. I thought she probably needs a feeding in the middle of the day bit just not doable with wet food. I’ll see how she does with some crunchies mixed in but I was trying stay away from them. I kind-of dont want give more than a can dont want her vomiting. If the crunchies spike her I was gonna try 1.5 cans pate twice a day. She was up to 9lbs and getting a belly and went to 7.8lbs with the diabetes and she feels like she’s plumping up again but dint have an exact weight.
She’s doing great with the lower glucose levels. Coat cleaner she’s grooming better no longer litter stuck everywhere stopped peeing next to her dishes acting like a kitten jumping up into counters she couldn’t do before.
