neuropathy in newly diagnosed cat

Hello Venetia.......have you had any experience or feedback with methylcobalamin (injectible form of B12, not just cyan---) for cats with neuropathy in their back legs? My 3 year old female cat Chloe has been on twice daily two unit injections for about one and a half months but she is still somewhat unsteady on her feet and walks everywhere and doesn't jump on things because she knows she is weak in her back legs. The vet says it is a side effect some diabetic cats have. She actually looks like she is drunk when she walks. Eats well, drinks quite a bit still and is affectionate otherwise. A few sites have mentioned this specific form of B12 to help with strength in the back legs. Thank you.
 
Sue is correct. The neuropathy can be reversed with a combination of getting the glucose levels under control and giving methyl B. When I adopted Spot she had severe neuropathy to the point where she could barely walk. Within 2-3 months of the proper treatement she was running and jumping on counters. :mrgreen:

Do you hometest? That is the best way to tell if you have the BG levels regulated.
 
Thank you both for your responses. They sound very encouraging. The vet is very happy with Chloe's numbers, her numbers were in a good range on her glucose curve (fructose curve, I think he called it) but the neuropathy remains. I will bring up methyl to him and look to purchase some. Wish us luck that sometime in the future she will be more steady on her back legs and will be confident to jump and walk longer distances. Hi Carol, this is Tracey. I sent Carol to this board because she is kind of new to Diabetes. Althought if I am correct I think she did have one other cat that was diabetic for a while. She is kind of shy ,Carol, but a great cat lover and has helped MANY cats.

I am trying to talk her into home testing. I was telling her how wonderful Venita was in teaching it even with a fool like me. I told her to talk to Venita about it if she can.

We were also talking about using different foods lower in carbs and higher in protein etc. I think she has a cat that perhaps can go into remission with her young age etc. I believe there is a limited amount of time to get them into remission I would call it after first diagnosed. Since Suzie didn't live long with the diabetes I don't know as much as people her on the board do.

I learned much to late what to do for Suzie. The humlin was horrible. . . Althought I don't think with all the other problems she had it would have changed things much but I would put money on it that Carol's cat can go into remission. If any one can help you get your cat that. These guys can.

PS Carol I will be at Kutztown on Sat if the weather holds.

Carol is a wonderful friend to many cats. She even has these great outside inclosers built for the ones that aren't inside cats. I think part of the problem with the low carb wet for is this cat is more of an outside safe in a large enclosure house etc. . .

Why don't you give them the numbers carol? If I recall I think you vet was doing the same thing Dr Jones was doing trying to keep the cat a little diabetic so she doesn't go to low. I am not sure I don't recall the numbers. However if that is the case I am not sure you will get rid of the neuropathy.

When Chloe was first diagnosed, her numbers ran over 550, but inhouse vet testing couldn't register higher than that. Almost one and a half months later, with two daily doses of two units each time, her glucose curve came to about 300, if I remember correctly. Concerning methyl B12, I am interested in injecting it for her neuropathy and seeing if it helps. Do I purchase it from a vet office? A health food store? Online (and where)? Thanks for any direction and best of health and happiness to all animals and their companion people.
