My cat was diagnosed with Diabetes in July - She started not being able to jump up on the bed. I called her doctor ( I'm fortunate to work at a veterinary hospital) and as soon as I told her she was walking funny and missing the bed she said, "Ashley, Don't panic but it could be diabetes" I was actually happy that it was a condition that I could treat.

She was doing fantastic - was actually going into remission a few months after being on Lantus and DM, Unfortunately her Kidneys were not doing as well. I took her off of DM and now she is on a kidney friendly diet.

Fast forward to November - She started to drag her leg which scared the heck out of me ( All I could think of was Saddle Thrombus - Luckily I could feel a pulse so I ruled that out) I took her into work and was informed about Diabetic neuropathy or even a spinal tumor. I started b12 injections and made some stairs so make it easier on her. She seemed to be doing well but lately shes really been dragging her back leg, you can see her trying to move it but it mainly drags.

Does anyone else have a cat that has had only one leg affected by diabetic neuropathy? Should I be concerned that even though shes regulated its not getting noticeably better? I'm getting more concerned that it could be a spinal tumor even though the doctors seem to think its neuro.

I'm ordering the Zobaline tablets and Im hoping that will help.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ashley.

I have. The doctor said I could go in for a MRI, but they still believe its Neuropathy. She doesnt seem painful at all and she stills gets around, I just hate seeing her drag her leg. The doctor is actually going to speak with a local neurologist on Monday. Another doctor has had 1 patient with neuropathy in only 1 leg but doesn't see it often.

She seemed to be doing better with the weekly b12 injections . She's only getting them 1 monthly now and after reading forums on cyancobalamin vs methlycobalamin I knew I had to try the Zobaline.

Have you looked at Tanya's Feline CRF web site? You might find it useful.

Also, it sounds like you're feeding prescription foods; there are some over the counter, low phosphorus foods out there which may be fed to cats with both renal compromise and diabetes.

An X-Rray may identify a bone tumor. Its how my civvie Pepper was identified with osteosarcoma of the bone. It may start showing up as a limp.

Thank you for the input.

Yes, They have done xrays but even with those its not definite. I would really need to get a MRI done , but I really do not think I want to go through with anesthesia - She already had a much needed dental done and I know the risk can sometimes be not worth it. She is 15, I just wish I knew if this was neuropathy. With a tumor I wouldn't think it would not get better just worse. But I'm not a doctor.

Have you seen it in just one leg.?

Is she still in remission. What are her blood glucose levels like? I would be surprised if its neurpathy if her BG is good.

When she started to drag her leg her levels were in the 300's. I felt horrible. I really thought I was on top of this. The doctor's said sometimes neuropathy can take months to heal. Have you heard the same?

Hi Ashley,

hope your kitty is doing OK. My Pudge, in the fall of 2012 (about 13 y/o, OTJ, an indoors kitty) escaped to the garden in the middle of the night. When found he was dragging his right back leg &, as evidenced by old leaves, had hidden under a shed for some hours. X-ray disclosed nothing. He spent the next 2 - 4 months basically on old comforters spread on the floor with food & LB right beside him. He was given zobaline daily. Eventually he recovered & shows no limp. Jumps like a champ. In his case, we really have no idea what had happened. Seems to me that I have read on this board that Zobaline can take even a year to work. That doesn't surprise me since every cat reacts in his/her unique way to meds & life circumstances. The age similarity of your & my kitties prompted me to write this.
Wishing you & yours the best in the New Year,
Sophie
