hi! So...I’m on day 5 of the BG testing before food and shoot. She’s now getting skittish when she sees the meter come out . It’s the beeping sound that upsets her more than anything. I have muted it, but she knows now. And for the first few days I could just come up while she’s eating for her insulin injections, but she’s getting goofy about that too even though I don’t think she feels either needle poke. I know it’s early on and hopefully we will fall into an easy routine soon. I hate that she’s feeling anxious. Makes me feel anxious as well. Entirely possible that it’s the opposite way around. Any suggestions on establishing a good routine? Also, does she need to have not had any food 2 hours prior to BG test??
Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

Hi!

Congratulations on your succesful tests , are you giving her some nice tasty rewards after each test? Rewarding them after the test with some treat they really like usually does the trick

You need to withdraw all food 2 hours before testing her but only in the pre shoot tests to make sure the result is not food influenced and is safe to give insulin the rest of the day you let her eat on her usual routine

Thank you for responding!!
Well she kinda takes off right afterwards, so the treats don’t work so well. and I think perhaps I’ve been giving the test a bit prematurely. I have to find a way to do all three things in one swoop! Test, feed, shoot. One of my concerns was having to pull her from
A hiding space to do this. The other fear is hypoglycemia. Gives me panic attacks!

I completely understand the fear of hypoglycemia, and after an early, non- critical event I decided to be prepared. I read the information and instructions for recognizing and dealing with hypos. I printed it out, then I made a hypo box with everything suggested in it (except a bulb syringe and lube), labeled it and still have it within handy reach. Idjit went OTJ quickly, but I have no intention of emptying the box, except cycling MC & HC food out. If Idjit goes back on the juice, I will get the rest of the equipment and be ready. Have you read the "Where can I find " post? I bookmarked it, but I think I am going to print out more info, what if there is a power outage, as the post asks, and you need info now? Jill, keep reading here, and you explore other resources and information online. I have several sites bookmarked with information that aligns with the philosophy and practice here. The more you educate yourself, you will become more confident, and feel more capable.

Welcome. Can we get you to start a spreadsheet? It will help us to help you. I also encourage you to post on the lantus forum. Are you only testing at AMPS/PMPS or are you getting tests between +4-7? If you can find a special treat that Jade really likes and give it after each test she will likely get used to testing. I also had a special testing spot so Max knew he was safe everywhere else. I used the bathroom sink because it was the right height. Max balked at fluids but when he got another special treat after fluids he actually waited for his treat instead of running away.

Dumb question... what does PS mean (AMPS/PMPS)?

Hi! I don't have any words of wisdom, but wanted to let you know you're not alone at the beginning. We started this journey about the same time and just today Grandpa started going away from me when he saw the test kit come out. Then tonight he tried to leave the room when I got his insulin drawn. We can do this! It's worth it for them.

I was confused by the acronyms, too. AMPS is morning (AM) pre-shot (PS). PM (evening) PS is the other.

Thank you!! How did it go end up for the two of you this evening?? This is very overwhelming, huh?

I'm only testing before her shot. I manage a restaurant at night, so I'm not home in the late afternoon or early evenings. Her shots are at 11:30 am and pm. The highest she's tested so far is 361 but that was an hour after she ate and got her shot ( I had the day off) her lowest was 160 so far.I'm going to work on doing a spreadsheet. I do have panic attacks when I spend too much time on here....:nailbiting:.
