Hi! I'm new here. I just adopted a beautiful sweetheart with diabetes and so far my shots have been less than ideal. More insulin gets on her fur than in her body. So my question is how deep is the needle meant to go? How do I know I'm there? I use UI 40 needles and insulin.

Thanks for any help!

Here are some tips on giving shots. How to give a shot

Can you give us some more info? What insulin and what dose? We will urge you to test at home, just like you would for your 2 legged family member. We test before each shot to make sure the amount of insulin we are planning to give is a safe dose and we test midcycle to see how the insulin is doing.

Where are you shooting?

If you try shooting in the flank area (which is the area between the rear hip and tummy) and tent the skin, you then want to inject the insulin into the tented skin area without going through to the other side.

And if you are shooting in the scruff (neck area) - again tent the skin and then inject.

Here is a video that demonstrates tenting and injecting - this vet is injecting in the scruff, but it's the same principle for the flank area.

Also, she shaved the cat. I never did this with Maui, but I understand her reasoning for doing so in the beginning.

Hopefully this helps - and if you google how to inject cats with insulin - lots more will show up
