the more i learn the more confused i get LOL

Just read on another diabetic cat site that 1/2" (12.7mm) needle length is recommended because shorter than that wont penetrate the fat layer.

This confuses me. I've been dosing going on 11 months now. I have reviewed shot technique with my vet. I use 5/16" (8mm) and really like the shorter tip. I've done pretty well not doing many fur shots. i wear a headlamp (its hilarious) and i part the fur so i can see exactly what i'm doing. I go in just a little ways - probably 3mm or so. Certainly not the whole length of the 8mm ndl.

My understanding is you really dont need to get the tip very far under the skin. no need to jam the length of the entire needle in. In fact, in doing that you could very well go through the other side and give a fur shot.

Am i misunderstanding something? Am i possibly shooting too shallowly? How deep do we really need to go for best absorption? Ack!

I use the 8 mm and even shorter 6 mm needle-length syringes with no noted differences. However, my cats are not "fat". Having a fat cat may make a difference especially with the 6 mm needles.
