If you don't mind, can i get your opinion on dosing. Copper had an ok day. He started out with high amps and went down to blue a little today and now high pmps. I was thinking to do 2u. What do you all think?

Thanks for all the input.

Lori

I think that the 2 units is doing pretty good on these PS numbers so I would go with 2 units for tonight. Todays curve looks really good.

I think that you didn't lower the dose enough on the lower PS's yesterday. But without more data it's hard to say what dose would have been better but this info is good for next time you get those lower PS's.

I agree. 2 units. Now that you have data, Lori, you can use your spreadsheet to help you figure out a dose. On 12/27 you shot 2 units into 349 and got a nice 126 nadir. That should mean that your shot tonight should produce similiar results (although he IS a cat.....) I would plan to get a mid cycle number, to be sure he is on track and to add to the data so you can use it again.

Thanks! Makes sense. Trying to understand it all. Still so confusing. Don't know if i can test tonight. He has had it with the ear pricks, and i need to sleep. But i will do it if needed. Will i be able to tell if he did well on cycle by just looking at the amps, if i don't test tonight?

THANKS!!!!!

lori

p,s.
will try to work on the SS name. Haven't had the time the last two days. I will look at your notes and try to figure it out.

If you need a break, take a break. This should be a good safe dose. Don't know if you usually do, but you can always leave out some food. If he feels a little "lowish" he can eat and bring himself up.

Yea i usually feed him about 12am before i go to bed. Then my husband gets up for work @4am and feeds him again. Then i get him again @7am. He seems to be doing good on that schedule. I will set alarm and check on him @ +5.5.

THANKS again for everything.

Lori,
Just noticed the feeding schedule in the AM. 4am and 7am? What time do you get the AMPS? Is it just before the 7am feeding?

You won't be able to know how well he did overnight just from his AMPS number. Only way to "know" is to get mid-cycle tests. But beans need sleep, so don't make yourself ill trying to get tests done. You can get curves when it works in your schedule. Just one cycle of numbers isn't going to make a huge difference.
Besides, and you'll know this if you don't already, whenever a bean makes a plan to do a curve or some other sort of exercise in this sugar dance thing.... kitty will find a way to thwart your plans! They're on to us.

As for the feeding schedule. I usually feed, then test within 10min of eating. It takes at least 30min for the food to show up in the numbers. So don't think his amps or pmps is affected by then yet.

Yes, copper has gotten a lot smarter on the ear pricks. He hears the beep on the meter and his eyes get very wide and trys to run away. He likes to hide in such odd spots now. Places that i have a hard time getting to him. He knows. I hope he will still like me after all these pricks. Do the pricks ever get less? Like only twice a day? I think this is the hardest part. I feel like i'm torturing him. He is such a sweet cat, i hate to disturb his personality. But at the same time, i know this is all to get him healthy again.

Thanks for the input.

Lori

You usually don't get to poke less, but it usually becomes easier. Do you have a spot where you poke and give treats? You might get him going there at off times, settling him in, warming his ear and then surprise him with just a treat, not a poke.

No special place, Just whereever i find him usually. Should i stay in one special spot? Didn't think about that. He loves his treats. He is alwasy hungry.

lori

Some people like having a spot - on a blanket or on the bed or wherever. Then the cat comes to associate that spot with treats (well, yes and pokes but we are hoping the treats are the over riding factor). Especially if you don't always poke when he is there, but sometimes there are treats only. :-D

We usually say to test first then feed because if you were to get a surprise low PS you would want to withhold food and test again in 20 minutes to make sure you have a rising bg number. If you have already fed then the bg will go up because of the food and will make the dosing decision a little iffy.

Lori,
You won't have to run curves as often. At minimum though, you're looking at 3 pokes a day. AMPS, PMPS and one nadir or the other.
With Bob, it got easier after the first couple of weeks. I got bigger lancets, and got to where I always got blood on the first try.

Once Bob was satisfied with my progress, when ever he heard the meter case zipper open, I wouldn't have to look for him or call him. He was there sitting in his "spot" waiting. My secret was shrimp. Bob would eat through my leg to get a shrimp. Every test, he got a shrimp. If it were up to him, I could have tested him every 15 minutes around the clock, just for an endless shrimp fest.

If I took the case out right now, he'd come running. I don't have any shrimp thawed out though, so no test tonight!

Carl

That's a good idea on the shrimp. I will have to try a spot with treats and not the prick.

I have tried not to feed him first before testing, but he is just too grumpy and hungry. I understand about the numbers being different in 30min if you have to test again. Don't know if i could get him to sit still without feeding first. Maybe the shrimp thing will work.

Lori

Cassie (and his non-diabetic brother Benny) are as crazy about freeze dried chicken as Bob is with shrimp. Cass (Mr. leave me alone) is turning into a lap cat. :-D
