My 17 year old civvie Smudge is literally skin and bones these days. He eats really well but never gains weight. He was eating AD along with FF but has gotten tired of it and he looks like he is losing weight. He is still a pretty happy cat though…..

He almost didn’t survive a mystery illness last spring that took the lives of his Mom & Dad. He lost most of his weight recovering from whatever that was.

We are not sure what is wrong since all blood and urine tests are normal except for some decreased kidney function. Maybe its lymphoma since his brothers both had it but in any case we are not doing any invasive tests to find out since it wouldn’t change anything. He is on 5mg of pred BID which seems to help his appetite.

What else can I feed him? Someone mentioned Royal Canin Recovery but there isn’t anywhere around here to get it unless I order a case. Just my luck he wouldn’t eat it! Maybe my vet can order some but I wanted to ask if anyone had any better ideas….

He isn’t fond of Nutrical so is there anything else that might work better?

In general, kitten foods are higher fat and thus, higher calorie. If there is no contraindication, you might try that.

Dealing with the same kind of thing with Spitzer.

Note: insulin requirements could go up, as fats are broken down for the carbs when needed.

The AFFCO standards require the same minimum fat requirements for kittens (growth and reproduction) as adults but requires a higher protein content for kitten food. However, most cat food today meet both the kitten and adult standards. The food label will identify which it meets. Most say goo for all life stages.
