Need Some Help/Advice on Food/Stomach Issues

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've been here (since Cartman crossed the Rainbow Bridge). Since then, I've adopted two sweet cats, Boris (4 yr old grey & white/cream DLH) and Roc (1 yr old DSH orange tabby). Intially, when I adopted Roc (at 6 months old) from the humane society, he was on Purina Pro-Plan. About 2 months after I adopted him, I moved out of my home into a domestic violence shelter & so my neighbor and friend, Susie (Cartman's real mom) took him in out of the kindness of her heart (I couldn't afford to board him). Roc adjusted well to the multiple cat household and continued on the Pro-Plan, however he had frequent loose stools & flatulance and so with my ok, Susie started him on Nestle Goodlife Recipe (what Susie's cats ate) mixed in with his Pro-Plan. I moved out of the shelter & into my own apartment after a month and was ready to bring Roc back home to live with me, however he & one of Susie's cat's, Boris had become inseparable & so with Susie's ok, I adopted him as well and put him on the same food as Roc (Purina Pro-Plan mixed in with Nestle Goodlife Recipe). Now having a little money, I took both to the vet to get their check ups & shots up-to-date and because both were having diarrhea. Both were found to be in good health (weight, temp, & vital signs) other than having evidence of fleas and were diagnosed with tape worms by a fecal stool test. The vet recommended treating them with flea medication (which I applied Pet Amour, generic fipronil) & both cats were given a broad-spectrum de-wormer. 2 weeks later, Boris still had diarrhea, so I took him back to the vet & got a 2nd dose of de-wromer to give him & they gave him a prescription for a week's worth of Metronidazole, an antibiotic & amoebacide. Also, the vet recommended putting Boris on a bland diet and recommended a prescription can food for sensitive stomachs. I slowly switched to feeding them both only the Goodlife Recipe, however Boris turned his nose up at the prescription can food, as he has done with Friskies can food as welll. The de-wormer took care of the tape-worm issue & Roc's poo firmed up wit the food change & both became less gassy (I think they both have food intolerances to the sulfites used as preservatives). A couple of months passed and here recently, I ended up needing to take Boris to the vet for an injured paw. Boris was still having frequent soft/liquid bowel movements and I expressed my concern about this while at the vet's & the vet recommended switching them to a food for sensitive stomachs. So after browsing the food section and reading food labels at the local Petsmart, I realized Boris is likely lactose intolerant (which Goodlife Recipe had skim milk powder in it) & choose Blue Buffalo for Sensitive Stomachs. Now it has been a week and I've been slowly changing them over to Blue Buffalo, however now they both having runny diarrhea and Roc has reguritated his food at least twice since starting the Blue Buffalo. Help! Is this a normal reaction? Any recommendations, food or otherwise? I'm really at a loss here and getting frustrated that I haven't been able to help my kitties feel their best.

Could it be inflammatory bowel disease? Vet could check with basic ultrasound, if it is that I have had great luck with plain unflavored aloe Vera juice. With Freckles I was leery of trying it, finally discussed with vet (had been strongly recommended by an online friend involved in rescue) vet didn't know anything about juice but said couldnt hurt and gave ok to try it.

It major helped! I was still doubter til he had another flare after we had run out. Got another bottle and within 24 hours he had no more diarrhea/ vomiting.

Have Missy on it since her liver enzymes were elevated. Started low, worked up, Missy has about 15-20 cc a day mixed in food.

Yeah, it very well could be. I went to the store tonight & got some canned pumpkin (to give their stools bulk) which I mixed in with some psyllum powder & canned chicken. Both cats sniffed & turned their noses up. Then I opened a can of tuna & mixed some of the pumpkin/chicken mixture in with it & Roc loved it, but once again Boris turned his nose up, that is until I put some into a bowl with some of the Blue Buffalo kibble & he ate it! So I'm thinking of feeding this mixture to them for a few days & seeing if it doesn't help firm up their stools a bit. What do you think?

Hello, the canned pumpkin is a good choice to see if that helps with both your kitties. As for Boris, when there are possible food intolerance issues the recommendation is to try a unique single source protein/carbohydrate food. The idea being if its a protein/carb source thats unique there won't be the inflammory reaction. There are a couple of foods that fit this bill - one is Royal Canin duck/green pea or vension green pea available from a vets office. The other that is sold at Petco (and cheaper) is Natural Balance duck/green pea or venison/green pea. I'm told the Natural Balance is the same formulation as Royal Canin. You are so great to not only have gotten back one kitty but took on two because of their bonding. Jan

Cartmans mommy I still recommend unflavored plain Aloe Vera Juice. Understand hesitancy to try it but it works, can do just a cc or 2 initially, even that improved Freckles, talk with vet about it. Give Missy more daily now but started slow with her too.

Just a thought.
