We are currently using the ipet glucometer, but going through so many strips that I'd love to find one that is reliable, but uses less expensive strips. We have used 25 strips since 1/30! (That's $7.50/day) The cheapest price I've found for the ipet strips is $61.99/100 (American Diabetes Wholesale). I've been doing searches, hoping to maybe find generic strips, but no luck so far.

Any thoughts on which ones to consider or NOT consider?

THANKS!!!!

Libby

If you don't insist on a pet-specific glucometer, the Arkray Glucocard 01 (at our shopping partner, American Diabetes Wholesale - see link at top of BB page) or the branded version, the Walmart ReliOn Confirm, are very reasonably priced, use a very small amount of blood, have 'sipping' test strips, and if you're near a Walmart, can be picked up nearly 24 hours per day.

The reference ranges - the values at which you make decisions about dosing - start 30 points lower than a pet Specific glucometer. Most of us are using human glucometers due to cost.

I have to say we use the Wal-Mart ReliOn Micro. The meter was $9 and the strips are $20 for 50.
I have to mention though that while you can pick up the meter anytime Wal-mart is open - maybe 24 hours of day if that is there hours, as the meter is sold in one of the isles right around the pharmacy. The strips are kept behind the pharmacy counter, and they aren't open 24 hours a day. They are also closed on holidays. I went on Easter Sunday to buy the meter (Cedric was dx'd on Good Friday) and I could not get test strips because the pharmacy was closed (I went back on Tuesday right after work). I have had no issues with it, even after Cedric knocked off the counter. I have trouble getting blood from him so the smallest amount it will take really helps me!

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

America Diabetes Wholesale has the strips for the Arkray Glucocard 01/ Walmart Relion Confirm for 5 boxes (250 strips) for $70. I bought the Relion Confirm and a box of strips at the Walmart store, and then ordered the strips online after I knew I could hometest. If you use the link to ADW from the forum here, then FDMD gets some benefit. You can click on the "shop" link at the top of this page.

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

any human meter is fine - except for the tru meters. just don't buy them - those are the "store brand" versions for walgreens, etc.

one touch
bayer contour
relion

are all good meters with inexpensive strips - or fairly inexpensive strips.

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

I bought a TrueRead from ADW and had problems... Now I have a Relion Micro from W-M and like it a whole lot better- less blood needed.

I hadn't even thought about the pharm being closed. Thanks!

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

I think it depends on where you are located regarding the strips behind the counter. My walmart has them out but in a glass case that you just turn a knob to get them

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

I just got the Relion Confirm and like it. It seems accurate and I buy the strips online cheaper and I don't have to go all the way to Walmart, which I hate and is far from my house. I also have the Bayyer Contour to test it against when a reading is weird.

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

Thanks, everybody - I need to make a Wal-mart run anyway, so I think I'll pick one up - and check out where they keep the strips, thanks for the heads up on that, too. And, I'll see what I can find on-line. I have some strips for the ipet and figured I should use them up first, but it makes sense to keep the unopened vials in case I need to compare a wonky number (since they don't expire until 11/13).

Thanks, again!!

Libby

PS Sounds like a lot of people use the ReliOn, maybe WM should offer us a discount :-)

Re: Need meter advice - Reliable but uses less expensive str

I was just re-reading and am wondering what's the difference between the ReliOn Micro and the ReliOn Confirm? Tried doing a search, but can't seem to find a comparison.

Thanks!
