Hi,
Brought my 16 yr old female in for ultrasound. Rec'd a call saying she wouldn't lie still for the test & they want to sedate her. She has not gotten regulated in 2.5 weeks and I have seen numbers from 59 to 389 over the last week. I had to be the one to suggest that they take the blood sugar and let me know before we do any sedation. Is sedation dangerous? Should I let them or not. She has had blood in her urine for last 4 mos but no other symptoms of anything, other than becoming diabetic.

Why didn't they think to test the BG before considering or calling me?

What should I do? Am I overreacting? They will call at any minute. Please answer!

Sedation is relatively safe and is sometime required for ultrasound. I have no idea why they did not consider taking a BG. Ask them.

Blood in the urine is more important than the bg and I'm sure that's what they were thinking in putting her under sedation to take the ultrasound first. New diabetics are all over the place in their numbers usually. My 16 yr old was anesthesized for an ultrasound. It is uncomfortable and she hates vets.
