We just found out from the vet that are cat is a diabetic with a lot of blood in his pee. We don't have money what can we do please help my soon is heart broke

Blood in the pee usually means a urinary tract infection. If you can at least pay for antibiotics the diabetes may go into remission.

Can you give us more information? Has the vet started any treatment i.e. insulin? what food is he currently eating?

We have a lady that is going to give him shots for the uti for free so that helps a ton we just don't want it to suffer

First things first - if you aren't using insulin yet, a food change to low carb canned food is in order. That can drop the glucose a good 100 mg/dL (the US measurement type for glucose in the blood). Friskies pates are one of the lowest cost, low carb foods you can feed your cat; Turkey and Giblets, and Poultry Platter are just 2 of the flavors available.

Stress at the vet's office may raise the glucose 100-480 mg/dL, so learning to test at home with an inexpensive human glucometer and comparing the tests to pet-specific reference numbers can help monitor the glucose level.

Treating the bladder infection may lower the glucose a good bit, too.

There are resources on the web that may help those needing to care for a diabetic cat. Check the list here.

That's good on the UTI treatment.

So I agree with BJ, start by transitioning him to friskies pâtés over the next week. Friskies pâtés are low carb (and cheap) which can cause remission! Then you might not need insulin at all. No dry treats either, go to Walmart and get some freeze dried chicken treats (dog bags are bigger) instead.

Then you want to test his blood to see if its working. Again Walmart. Go get a relion confirm meter and a pack of lancets and a pack of strips. You will test his blood once a day for now to see if treating the infection and the food change is enough.

Let us know once you have gotten the kit and we can explain how to test.

Hello, and welcome to FDMB!

You've had some great advice from BJ and Wendy: Treating the UTI will help your kitty feel a lot better and should bring down the blood glucose level. And transitioning your kitty to wet low carb food will lower the blood glucose level even further. Your kitty may even be one of the lucky ones that doesn't need insulin.

Don't lose heart!

Would you like to tell us your kitty's name? And your name?

Eliz
