Just tested Toby for ketones today. It says he has small ketones. What can I do? He is eating and drinking good. He is acting
alright been out in his pen twice following me around the house. Just doing normal cat things. Do I need to get him to a vet.
Is there something I can do for him at home give more insulin. He Just started Levermir this will be 2-1/2 days on it. He is at one unit now. He was on 4-1/2 units of PZI . His numbers were 387 this morning and at +6 he was at 332. He acts like he is doing better today. 2 day ago he tested neg. for ketones. Couldn't catch him in his litter box yesterday. Scared half to death.

Just called my vet. who is the nicest lady around. She said as long as he was acting normal and eating and drinking that
she would watch him and if there was any change give her a call. Makes me feel better to have someone like her around.
Sorry to get upset and put out a 911. Thank -you all Peg and Toby

I think getting worried and upset goes with the territory, Peg. I've had the heart put crossways in me umpteen times since Saoirse started insulin therapy.

They get to be like one of the family. This is a terrible Illness. It's always changing. Never know what the next day brings.
Thank-you for caring. Peg and Toby.

Hey Peg,

Sorry no one caught your post earlier today. I'm not very familiar with ketones myself but have read several times that the recipe for DKA is not enough food + not enough insulin + infection/inflammation. I know a lot of people will add extra water to the food to help keep the kitty hydrated and flush out the ketones.

Hopefully others with more experience/knowledge will be along to add in additional information. It's great that you're checking for ketones; keep that up!

Talked to my vet. again tonight and she said she wasn't worried if he was still eating and drinking. He's eaten several times today plus drank some water. I've been mixing water with the food. She said to call her in the morning and let her know how he's doing. Hope the Levermir kicks in soon to get his bg down in better numbers. Peg and Toby

Toby's numbers looked better last night . His Pms started out 385 at +4 it was 245 at + 6 it was 222 at +8 it was 286 and this
morning he started out at 376. On relaxed Lantas it was suggested to go up .25 on his 1unit twice a day dose. I think I made a mistake and did .5 but this morning went back to .25. Tested again this morning for ketones and it said he still has a trace. I hope they clear out today. He's still eating and drinking ok. Wonder if I should of kept the dose at 1.5 or 1.25? Peg and Toby

Peg, I would start posting on the Lantus forum, either the relaxed or TR. levemir acts very much like Lantus so you can get dosing advice on either forum. (the Lantus forum doesn't seem very busy - most Levemir users seem to post on either Lantus ones). On those forums, you can post daily with your preshots and nadirs and ask for help with dosing.
