Hello! My cat Snow has recently been diagnosed with diabetes this week and we are currently waiting for the insulin to be approved. It’s been very stressful with all the costs and wanting to be very well informed on how everything will go. At the end of the day, I just want my kitty to live comfortably and happily. It doesn’t matter how much money this all ends up costing. Currently, I have been looking for a blood glucose monitoring system but the one I have found on Chewy has terrible reviews. Also on top of her having diabetes she had very bad teeth resulting in the removal of most of her back teeth around two years ago. When we went to the doctor this week, she had one loose tooth pulled out and now she won’t eat or has trouble. We purchased the wet food from Purina that was prescribed by the doctor but she also isn’t interested. I really could use some help please :(

Hi there welcome to the group. Sorry to hear about Snow! Which wet food do you mean? Savory selects or the pate? My boy wouldnt touch the pate but he LOOOVES the Savory Selects.

But the truth is you don't need to feed expensive special food from Purina. Diabetic cats need food that is low in carbs, many people here feed varieties of Fancy Feast classic, Weruva, Tiki Cat and more. There is a list of low-carb cat foods that is a huge help:

Hi and welcome to the forum. The first few weeks are overwhelming but things will settle down.
We can help you with everything. Ale and Kyle have given you good advice on food and glucose meters.
Here is a link for new members which tells you about the signature, spreadsheet and hypo box and other things.
If you can get the Spreadsheet and signature set up, get a glucose meter, and some low carb food that Snow will eat, you will be well on the way to getting sorted.

What do you mean 'waiting for the insulin to be approved'? Who has to approve it? I hope the insulin you are being prescribed is either lantus (glargine), levemir or prozinc. They are the only two type suitable for cats.
Keep asking questions.

There's a good chance that the tooth that was loose and the vet pulled has left roots in your cat's jaw. Not pulling a tooth properly is a set-up for infection and pain. When a tooth is pulled, usually under sedation, the vet should take post-procedure x-rays to be sure that there isn't a root left behind. I'm sure when your cat had the multiple extractions, you were given pain meds. It sounds like pain meds are called for now. Frankly, I'd suggest getting the vet to take a look at your cat's mouth.

If you take a look at the food chart that Kyle linked, we consider low carb as under 10%. However, most people here feed their cats foods that are in the general neighborhood of 5% carb. You'll also want to keep some foods that are higher in carbs (medium carb = 10 - 15%; high carb is over 15% carb) on hand in case you need to raise blood glucose numbers once you start insulin.
