Vet told me to use 1 tsp metamucil for loose bowel movements that have been going on ever since switching from diet food to diabetic food and then to EVO food.

Pharmacist said this sounds like a reasonable amount.

Does this sound like too much for a 9 pound cat?

And how should I give it--in the water or on the food?

Anyone have experience with loose BMs with their diabetic cat?

Yep Tiggy has it intermittently and I tried canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and It didnt help.. But you could give it a try.. And Tiggy has always been a little soft.

My cat only likes dry cat food, and no human food (usually) but I will keep it in mind. I wish I knew the cause of the loose stools and if she will need to be treated for it for the rest of her life.

Hi TMR,
If I may put my 2 cents in, my jezzi never in her life had an issue with her bowel movements, and we're talking about 15 years, but the day after I started her on PZI she went soft. At first it was bad, very runny and her ex-vet gave me kaopectate for her. It's nasty and jezzi hates it, but it helps. Now that she's on a much lower dose of insulin, but still adjusting to a wet food diet, it's getting firmer each day.

Im a newbie here as well, and I hope you or the more experianced members on the forum don't mind me replying. I certainly don't want to interject where I shouldn't, but instead just wanted to share my experiences with you.

PS, welcome!

I find that some kitties can have senstitive stomachs so when you change the food it can cause loose bowel movements. Try to transition slowly. If youare already done with the transition you could add some fortaflora to the food or some probiotocs, as well. I think your cat's bowels will probably go back to normal soon, and if not it may be a reaction to something in the food like a possible allergy. It took my civie, Phoebe, about 2 weeks for her tummy to get back to normal after switching to all wet and adding some probiotics.

I already bought the metamucil so I am going to try that. I am just not sure if the vet's recommendation of 1 tsp is a good amount (I already contacted the company and they said do what the vet says) and whether to put it on her food or in her water. She has been on the new food for over a month.

Can you try a little of the metamucil yourself and see if it has much or any flavor? I mix meds/ supplements in the food if I have good eaters because then I know they will get it all when they clean their plate. Mine don't drink a whole lot of water so I wouldn't know if they would get the whole amount.
And I agree, I would start with the dose the vet suggested and see if there is any improvement.
Sorry not really a better help.

My Simba has chronic loose stools and metamucil ( psyllium) helps. Metamucil has varieties with sweeteners and flavorings which cats shouldn't have. I think you should be able to find the plain, unsweetened, You can buy plain psyllium at health food stores, it's cheap and you can use it too in smoothies.

I started with 1/4 t then worked up to 1 t in a week.

Mix it in wet food with an extra T of water, don't put it in water. It will get slimy and you don't ever want to do anything to water to turn a cat off of it.

Don't give your cat Kaopectate...they changed the formula and now it has salicylates in it..here is a warning on it:

There other other cat safe products: PetPectillin and Pro-Pectalin. They are dosed by weight. I think the Pro-pectalin is easier because it's a thick formula that comes in a large syringe, You just dial in the amount. The PetPectillin is sweet, sticky and vanilla flavored and most cats need about 1 t...a huge amount to get in their mouths with a dropper or syringe...it ends up splashing all over their fur.. a mess, but it works quickly.
