Okay, so have been reading more and more and feel evermore unsure of what I should be doing and when. I am so used to being able to handle Jack's health issues and I feel completely out of water on this one. I took 2 weeks off from work to try and get a handle on this and am already through a little more than the first week and feel like I haven't gotten anywhere.

Sooooo.....how should I be entering data into the spreadsheet I created? Once you look at what I have, I am in desperate need of advice as to what data you need from me for a full picture of where we are....when I should feed in relation to when I test, when I dose, etc.

After I feed him, I have been recording info in alphatraker as to how much he ate, but I leave the rest out for free-feeding. Should I not be doing this? If not, when should I put it back down and when should I test? I am very anal about this stuff and want to get things right. I am just confused as to what is right and how much I need to track how carefully.

PLEASE help.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The AMPS is the AM Pre-Shot...You always test before you shoot to make sure they're high enough to shoot safely. PMPS is PM Pre-shot

The "U" column is for Units...how much insulin you shoot

The "+ cells" correlate with how long it's been since the last shot....so +3 is 3 hours after the shot, +5 is 5 hours after the shot...all the way up to +11...and then you start over at the next Pre-shot

We prefer they don't eat for the 2 hours preceding the Pre-shot tests so that the test isn't influenced by food. After that, most of us feed several small meals over the next several hours. Mini-meals are actually easier on the pancreas than feeding 2 big meals every day. It'll help for you to either note in the Remarks section when you feed, or some people put a * in the cells when they feed.

Usually we'll want you to try to get most (if not all) of the food in the first 6 hours after the shot too, but this is something you just have to experiment with since ECID (Every cat is different). The reason for this is that after about +6, the insulin is starting to wear off, so it's not usually a good idea to add food when it's starting to wear off or it can "put the brakes on" the insulin

Do you have any other questions? I hope this explanation helps!

Hi Sarah.

What kind of insulin is Jackie on? What kind of meter do you use to test? Are you having any problems with the actual testing? I live in Suisun City, so if you need someone to come help you learn to test, I'd be happy to do it. You came to the right place. I know all the info is overwhelming and confusing, but you will find a lot of people here to answer your questions and help you learn.

Thank you. Yes, it does help. As to the food, it was my understanding that they were supposed to be fed before dosing? So, he doesn't? Jack is on Lantus 1 unit twice a day. I tried to link his profile to my signature but can't seem to do it:banghead:

With the older insulins, it was important to feed them first so when the insulin "hit", there was food on board, but with Lantus, the onset of action isn't for several hours after the shot so it's not as vital

You want to test (to make sure they're high enough to shoot), Feed (to make sure they're at least eating "normally") and shoot

Most of us test/feed/shoot all within about 5-10 minutes

Okay Guys and Gals- I finally got Jackie's Profile to link to my signature. Now you can look at our details & let us know if anything is missing. Meanwhile, I will have to go through and input details from my AlphaTraker Log into Jackie's Spreadsheet here.......Thanks you.

Jackie's #'s finally started looking better yesterday, so I think all my reading Sunday about the CORRECT way to do things may have helped

Jackie is a beautiful black boy!!

Don't worry Jackie...Mama may have brought Jasper into your home without your permission, but she has enough love for all the fuzzy feets!
