hello all,

my poor baby almost 13 yrs old calico is constipated looking for ideas to help her out. She has diabetes on Lantus, 2nd stage renal failure and possibly hyperthyroidism we are still trying to rule out. tried sweet potatoe last night didnt work and she gets daily krill oil. last time she went was yesterday and yelped poor thing. today she hasnt even attempted. i even add extra water to her food. hope to hear back thank u

When you're using pumpkin (or sweet potato which I personally would avoid because of the sugar content), it takes more than 1 "dose" to work....it only adds fiber to the diet and can take a few days of consistent treatment to work (if it's going to)

Most of us here use something called Miralax .....it's available at WalMart...it's a tasteless powder that helps pull fluid into the stool so it'll pass easier and it works pretty well for most cats. We usually suggest starting on 1/8th teaspoon twice a day

It is important to get extra water into the cat too so there's extra water to be "pulled into the stool"

thank you. i figured it would be awhile, and with the sugar content ur right not worth the increased sugar. i will def try it. i should prob make sure its ok for her kidney issues 2nd stage and hyperthyroidsm. not sure if it has issues with these diseases? take care

Hi Deb...Elmo is hyperthyroid with borderline kidney issues too. We use 1 teaspoon canned pumpkin twice a day .If he won't eat it I warm it and syringe it. Just be sure it's NOT pumpkin PIE filling but plain canned pumpkin. I also use miralax as needed when pumpkin is not fully helping.

I have had luck with canned pumpkin but feeding Young Again Zero Carb kibble along with Riley's wet food has regulated him.

Before that the poop was 'stuck' and he was dragging his poor rear end along the floor. A number of posts mentioned that Young Again gave some cats loose stools but it solved Riley's constipation problem.

I just have a real problem giving my cat yet another human chemical but that's just me.

When my Cinco was really stopped up, I gave him 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of canola oil (can use coconut oil) in his food. It got him moving. For maintenance I gave him 1 tablespoon of squash baby food in his breakfast every morning.

I remember when Riley first started Lantus his stomach was rock hard and I almost took him to the vet. Instead, I gave him a teaspoon of butter and awhile later he threw up, and problem solved. I don't know what had happened but the stuff he threw up, I don't think he could have passed. It looked like a huge solid slimy mass and looking at it, I could see why his stomach was so hard and he was so uncomfortable. It's never happened before or since. The vet wasn't too happy with me but Riley was alot happier. I never thought of the coconut oil though for constipation. It makes sense and I am assuming would be good for them anyways.

Slippery Elm Bark is good for constipation and diarrhea. I buy mine from Mountain Rose Herbs online.
I also give Fritz Dr. Good Pet Feline Enzymes.
You can also add Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera (inner fillet only)
If you have time visit website foodfurlife click on how to scroll to bottom click on the supplement excellent info.

i agree rather something more natural.. i wonder if young again cat food is ok for renal failure. ill check it out thanks agian

Dry food in general is not great for cats with renal failure, as it takes moisture from the body to help digest it. With kidney issues, you want to be sure they are getting plenty of fluids. I think the coconut oil would do the same thing Cherie is describing, but more gently.

We have a lot of people here whose cats have both FD and CRF, and some that have civvies with kidney issues, too. Keep asking questions!
