My Molly is 15. She was recently diagnosed with feline diabetes. When she was first diagnosed her blood sugar level was 794! The vet put her on NPH and it got it down to the 500s. We were switched to ProZinc and she seemed to do better. Her dosage is much higher but her levels are down to the 300s. She seems to feel better. She is currently receiving 5 units of ProZinc twice a day. The vet did a rolling glucose test and even upped her dose to 6 to check for the somogyi effect and said that didn't happen and that she ruling her diagnosis as insulin resistant. Are there any other options for her? I would love the advice if it will help my cat have a quality life. Thanks in advance!

Hi Jennifer and welcome!

I think we need a bit more info. How gradual was the dose increase? We recommend dose adjustments by 1/4 unit not a full unit so it’s gradual and you don’t skip right past the ideal dose. What food is Molly eating?

Prozync is a much better insulin for cats so that’s a great choice. However, one option if prozync is not working is trying another insulin like Lantus, which is also a long lasting insulin. Most of us here home test so we can be on top of the bg levels and adjust dose accordingly and more often since it doesn’t require a vet visit. Is that something you think you might consider? One test only at the vet doesn’t tell you a whole lot since cats are always stressed out and their numbers will be much higher due to it. Anyway, here’s a link to our prozync forum and I suggest you read all the yellow sticky notes which have a lot of great info. If you’re up for home testing, we can help with that too!
