My cat Sable is not diabetic but she has been on prednisolone for two years due to an autoimmune disease. She also has shown some signs of IBD and because of this she will vomit if her stomach is empty for too long. She usually has to eat every 2-2 1/2 hours. She eats Fancy Feast. eats 14 cans in a week, 4 of those cans are with gravy because it is mixed with her pred, the rest are classic turkey or beef.
The problem is she is gaining weight, she is now 8 years old, at three years she was 9.2 lbs. a year ago she was 11.6, in September she was 12.2. I don't have the weights for her between 3 years and 7 years.
Because she is on prednisolone I am concerned about her weight, I have tried cutting down the food but she does seem hungry and also the empty stomach thing. How much Fancy Feast should she be eating a day? Is 2 cans a day too much. I am concerned that she could develop diabetes because of the steroids use and the weight. I know the people on this board have so much experience with all kinds of problems so I am seeking your help.
I was on here a few years ago with my diabetic cat,(he died 2 years ago) that is why I know about this message board and the people here.

My mom feeds each of her cats 3 cans of fancy feast a day and one is 12 lbs and one is 13.
My cat Smoky has the opposite problem, he lost a lot of weight from the diabetes and not wanting to eat. I bought a baby scale to keep track of his weight. You can buy them fairly cheap, mine was about $30 at Walmart if u don't already have one. I googled calorie chart for canned foods for cats. I can try to find the name of the site for you.

wondering if you can find a juicier lower carb than the gravy variety of ff-
that is where the carbs are :( (the good stuff LOL)

my non diabetic is on budesonide and has the chubbies now -we are working on getting his figure back:rolleyes:

Evolve makes a low carb pretty juicy seafood flavor and the Sheba foods are pretty loose and juicy compared to ff-

Daves is also juicier....I think baby food may even be less calories and carbs than the gravy variety.
I love carbs put they do pack on the pounds :(

Thank you Lisa, I printed out the pages for Fancy Feast. I give that because of the low carb count. Sable is a small cat and 10 lbs. is probably a good weight for her. I am thinking that I should get her exercising more, maybe that adds to her problem with weight gain. Cats on steroids are prone to diabetes, and this cat is so difficult to give anything to it would be a nightmare if she becomes diabetic.

I will try some Sheba, Sable only gets the gravy on her meds day and that is the first can of the day but it does mean 4 cans a week. Also she cannot eat seafood, it triggers her IBD, as does chicken now. I think some foods are low carb but also have sauce, I have a list somewhere, I will look it up. Thank you for your help.
