My baby just had her check up for this year and they said that she needs her teeth cleaned. My regular vet was off that day so I was told to check with him for any special instructions. I have not called him yet and I am going to next week after the holiday is over however I was wondering if there was anything I needed to know before I talked to him. I already know that she cant have any food after 12 pm and I have to have her at the vet at 9am  but they dont even start the cleaning until noon. Im already worried about this because if I cant feed her then I cant give her her shot. Also she loves her food and she is going to be crying for it and I know thats going to be hard for me to take!!

Some vets want you to skip or halve the dose when fasting for procedures.

When the insulin wears off, even without food, the glucose may continue to increase. It depends on the vet's preferences.

Raw gizzards may help prevent some of the tartar, as will teaching the cat to permit tooth brushing.

One thing I would ask would be about the anesthesia... I would state clearly that you do NOT want Ketamine used, also no Metacam or Convenia. I know of one lady whose vet used Ketamine during a dental and the cat came home deaf and blind.

For sure you can skip the morning dose of insulin, and depending on her numbers when she comes home, I would set a high no-shot number as anesthesia will result in lower than normal BG numbers for many cats. My cat surfed in numbers under 100 until the next day and her dental was at 1030am.

You can ask them to call you when the dental is done, but you can also take some of her wet food to leave at the vet in case she is OK to eat..... you may not want them to feed diff food. Some people take a shirt or something of theirs to leave in the cage with the cat for comfort.

If any extractions, be sure to get pain meds when you come home, and for any antibiotics, be sure they don't give any 'long lasting shot' Convenia because if your cat has a reaction to it, that's tough because you can't take back that long lasting shot. I was given oral drops after my cat's dental, I think Antirobe drops.

Oh my goodness! Im so thankful that I asked! I had no idea about some of these issues. She was a stray so I dont know for sure how old she is but she is about 13 - 16 years old and never had to do this before!! I will make a list of things to talk to the vet about BEFORE they touch her!!! I really hate to have to put her through this but I know it has to be done. I appreciate all the feedback. Thanks so much~ nailbite_smile

Were any possible extractions mentioned? If so, you may want to take her to a vet that has xray equipment for use with dental work. That can make all the difference between getting the entire tooth out and leaving a root piece behind to fester.

Nothing was said about taking any teeth out. I will be sure to ask if he thinks so and ask questions about the x-ray equipment. Thanks for the input. After I call him on Tuesday I'll know more. Cant wait for this to be over~ @-)

If you give insulin you need to think about the timing of it versus no food. You dont want to shoot and have no food in the system for hours..

When my cats had their dental we did this below. My normal shot time is 11am. No feeding for 12 hours before surgery... so no insulin shot in that time either.

11am normal shot. Ate normal meals through day.
8pm stop feeding.
11pm skipped shot

8am operation
11am - gave vet insulin and he measured and shot for us. Ask your vet about doing this. Gave vet food too.
5pm brought cat home
11pm gave insulin - because of the operation we tested more for the next few days as a dental can reduce infection ( as well as post dental antibiotics) and so reduce blood sugar.
