Hey there, I have a question I am hoping to get some advice on. My 15 year old cat Chleo has been on insulin injections for around 6 years now. His vet prescribed vetsulin twice a day at 1 unit. Recently he has been showing a rebound effect where his sugars drop then spike. We lowered the insulin to 1/2 unit but it showed the same effects. My vet seems to be as confused as me which doesn’t help. For the past few weeks I have not given any insulin but am keeping track of his glucose with a human glucose monitor. He consistently stays between 188 -259. My question would be is this still too high? His skin has cleared up from the constant dandruff, his eyes are clear....Just want to make sure I am doing what’s best for him. His diet is Fancy feast pâté with an occasional high protein kibble (40%) that he steels from his brother.

I would reduce by smaller increments. jmo

It would be easier for our experts if you had a spread sheet to see how her numbers tracked. If interested you can find that info here:
Suggestions, Tech Support & Testing Area

Just add your numbers from as far back as you have records for.
Again welcome. We will do our best to answer your questions.;):coffee:

Welcome to you and Chleo!

As JT mentioned, the spreadsheet will be super helpful and the only way members here will feel comfortable giving you dose advice. We need to see the numbers to be make sure we’re giving you the best guidance to you and Chleo. How often do you test? Do you test before each shot every day? Those are important numbers to get and also a midday number so you can see how low he goes with the insulin. What I can say right now is that those numbers do require insulin. Sometimes an insulin stops working and you need to switch to a different type. Vetsulin is also called caninsulin because it was designed for canines and it’s not always the best for cats. Have you discussed other options with your vet like Lantus or Prozync? Those are long lasting insulins that may help avoid the highs and lows as they work more consistently for 12 hours.

Fancy Feast pate is what most of us feed our sugar babies here as it’s less than 10% carbs and that’s what you want to feed a diabetic cat. If you can manage to keep him away from the high carb kibbles that would be ideal. How often and how much are you feeding? I know Vetsulin works hard and fast but I’m no expert on it. Feeding him the bulk of his meals around shot time would be best. Also you have to makes sure he eats at least 30 minutes before the shot with Vetsulin :cat:
