I woke up this morning and took his blood sugar and he was at 133. He didn’t eat a whole lot like he usually does. He did eat some. Retested at 820 and he was 171. He’s due for his shot and I know it was said in here not to give when below 200. So I am holding off.

The vet changed him from his 3 units once a day that was given to him Thursday, to 2 units 2x a day yesterday. I feel like I’m an idiot and should have just gone with the 1 1x per day like suggested here. Can I still drop him to that when I can give his shot? And what should I do about this morning shot now? Every time I talk to this vet a get a new answer and I’m so lost.

Hi Ashley

you are only just beginning this journey so honestly, it's fine. Skip this morning, shoot 1u tonight and hold 1u for 7 days 2x a day and all will be well.

I know you're stressed and distraught and want the best for Lou. He'll be ok.

Good news is he is definitely responding to the insulin and it's lowering his BG effectively! Just need to adjust the dose. You're not an idiot.

it is extremely difficult to come to terms with ignoring your vet's direction and going with what some strangers on the internet are telling you lol. I know exactly how this feels. God forbid you try to talk to someone about it like a partner and they go "WHATTTTT?? You're going to listen to some people on the internet???"

Thank you so much everyone. While I was happy to see his lower numbers I was frantic like OMG d I skip his shot, is it bad to skip his shot, and every other insane thought that popped into my head lol. I'm definitely going to stick to the 1 unit when I do his next one. I will skip this one I just wanted to make sure that wasn't bad but I did not want to give him a shot and make him hypo. Yes I have lots of Karo syrup just in case so I can be prepared.

I mean skipping a shot isn't ideal. Glargine likes consistent dosing, every 12 hours, and works best when that consistency is adhered to over an extended period of time.

but you're only just starting out and establishing that routine so no big deal. His BG will go higher today without the shot yes. But once you're a few days into shooting the same dose every 12 hours things should stablize and we can start to see a picture develop in the SS, get an understanding of how the insulin is hitting him, when, and very importantly -- find the nadir (low BG point, when the insulin is peaking)

Yes! I totally get it. :)

Louf ended up getting int the 500 range, 505. Went down slightly, not much, just gave his 1 unit. 1 unit is so hard to measure especially on the stupid needles they gave me because the lines go by 2. I will test again in two hours and hopefully he will go back down. He seems super crummy right now with how high it was. And between giving him the testing, the insulin, and two seizure meds he is not very happy with me right now :( I feel terrible to keep poking him like this even though I know I have to check him.

Mine go by 2’s they are horrible. Now with the one unit I have to go in between the top line and the first line and it’s soooo hard.

@Hendrick Cuddleclaw I just wanted to say thankkkkkkkkk you! We ordered the needles you suggested and OMG what a difference. The needle length is half the amount and the 1/2 unit measurements are fantastic. Lucifer says thank you.
