My cats are the pickiest cats I know but love them dearly. To make a long story short, I have one diabetic boy but his glucose numbers aren't off the chart either. They stay around upper 200s but since being on insulin it drops to around 159 or so from when I took it the other day. Compared to hearing people have cats with glucose numbers of 500 or more I feel better about my cat. I know dry cat food is not recommended although if you go to a vet they say its not bad at all. I have gone through so many dry cats foods but I want to find one that is lowest in carbs and high in protein as possible but def low in carbs. I have fed Nutrisca but my inside cats do not seem to enjoy it. Next I recently bought Young Again Zero Carb and my cats are not eating it because they seem always begging for some wet cat food or something. I've been told they have even went and ate some dog food and it upsets me. They talk so highly about Young Again and yet my cats are not eating it much since the bowl stays full for a few days. So they rely on FF classics for food source but I know FF is like cat crack from what I hear and so I don't think its the best diet for them but I'm not going to keep spending alot of money on food when it doesn't work. So with that said, do any of you have very finicky and picky cats who turn their noses on so many foods but you have finally found a healthy dry cat food that works? If so, what do you feed your cats?

Re: Need advice on choosing best dry cat food-very picky cat

Most of us don't feed dry at all. In fact what you hear referred to around here as Kitty Crack is DRY FOOD! Period, it is a lousy food choice for any cat. It is full of stuff a cat was never meant to eat. Cats need one food source animal protein, they are obligated carnivores. What they aren't is small dogs, while dogs are more carnivore than say a horse or a cow, they are in fact closer to humans in diet, they are omnivores. So they require fruits and veggies to be healthy, a cat needs neither fruits or vegetables and the only grain one should ever eat should have been processed by a rodent or bird first.

Your cats might actually be smarter than you think if they are turning up their noses at the dry and begging for the Fancy Feast. They have the right idea, dry food = bad,
Fancy Feast Classics = good.

If you want to stop throwing your money away on dry food they won't eat, then stop buying dry altogether, and let them have what mother nature is telling them is good for them, the canned FF. Not only will you save money on not buying dry they won't eat, litter costs go down, because less garbage in, less garbage out, and vet bills wil be reduced as well because frankly they will get sick less.. Seen it happen with my own non-diabetics. And the other upside is with an all canned low carb diet your diabetic may go into remission and stay there, so no more insulin costs either.

Re: Need advice on choosing best dry cat food-very picky cat

Thanks for the replies all. I agree that dry food isn't good even with what is said about Young Again being the lowest of low carb dry cat food. I just thought I read that FF classic foods is like cat crack because it has by products in it and I'm not sure if its fully nutritious to what they need especially since it says to feed like 4 or 5 cans of it daily especially with my 21 pound cat and I KNOW they do not eat that much. I just feed them a can in the morning and a can in the evening. The hard thing is everyone has a opinion and when one person tells you something someone else tells you something completely different. Its just hard to figure out what to feed them without feeling guilty and knowing that when I feed them they will be content and getting what they need. As with something the lady from Young Again told me which makes sense is that when you feed a cat a low carb food they will consume less because their bodies are satisfied with the nutrients compared to a high carb food in which they'll keep eating and eating and coming back 30 mins later and eating again. So I do believe she is accurate in a lot of things so I just don't know how FF is something nutritious when my cats are having diarrhea and throwing up on it.

Fancy Feast Classic Pates are fine to feed your cat.

And just a note - by-products include cartilage, bone marrow, lung tissue, connective tissue, etc. These are things a cat would eat anyway.

Many of us feed our cats either Fancy Feast or Friskies canned food. I have 7 cats and they all eat Friskies canned food. One of mine is about 18 lbs. I feed each of mine 1/2 of a 5.5 oz can twice a day. This would be about the same amount as 2 cans of Fancy Feast.

I prefer wet too.

But I wanted to let you know that for the Young Again....
2 Tablespoons is a full days serving. It's higher calorie so they don't eat as much.

Sounds like they prefer the wet.
You just need to give their digestive systems time to adjust.....
any change can bring about the runs .... and if they are eating it fast.... they can barf....
