Hello all,
Fluffy is doing really well on his new food-insulin regime. We've been feeding Wellness Chicken, Turkey and occasionally Chicken & Herring and Beef & Chicken.
Fluffy's 2 "sisters" Starfish and Gibby, seem happy with the new menu, but his "brother" Zeus, is not doing as well. The other night he had loose watery stools repeatedly and was letting us know that it was uncomfortable for him by going outside of the box! The next day he didn't eat much and in the evening he had an episode where he fell over onto his side, drooled and his pupils dilated - this episode didn't last long - maybe 30 seconds, but it seemed like longer because it was terrifying. We gave him some Fancy Feast gravy food and he perked right up, so we've been feeding him that in small meals since then. Yesterday, I switched Zeus to Friskies Seafood Supreme since it's got a good carb count in case Fluffy gets into his food. This morning however, Zeus had another loose-stool episode outside of the box. I have some cans of Merrick to try next but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about what we could give to Zeus or add to his meals to help with this that would also be safe for Fluffy if he snuck a few bites of his brother's dinner.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Need advice-diabetic-friendly menu disagrees with our ci

First, I would have him checked out by the vet just to make sure his diet is causing his problems. If it is his diet, you can successfully feed him a different diet than the others. We do it. The main thing is to have them all on the same schedule as far as time goes. It takes work, and being willing to stick to the schedule. You will just have to seperate them at feeding time.

When it comes time to eat, just take him and his different food and put him in a seperate room to eat. Give everyobn 20-30 minutes to eat. Then, pick up all leftover food(unless it'ssomething they can all eat-then it's ok to leave it down)and let everyone out of the rooms they eat in. That is what works for us having diabetics and civvies that eat different foods.

Thanks for the advice, Becky. It's good to know that separate meals is doable after a bit of work. I'll try to get a vet appointment on Monday.

Re: Need advice-diabetic-friendly menu disagrees with our ci

I'd agree, the episode you describe sounds more like some type of seizure than diet related, unless he's got some kind of allergy to the food. IMO That definitely warrants a vet visit ASAP.

Mine also eat separately. Jesse James is on an rx diet, and while none of their food would hurt my sugarcat Mikey, he would, if given the chance, scarf his own food and then go eat everyone else's, so they're separated to make sure everyone can eat in peace and get their full meal! They're so used to the routine that they all run to their respective spots and wait for me to put their bowls down.

I forgot to put in my reply that mine too, know the routine and all I have to do is call them by name and walk with their dish to the room they eat in and they usually beat me to the room!

Re: Need advice-diabetic-friendly menu disagrees with our ci

I feed my two separately as well, and different food. They both run to the kitchen while I'm getting things ready - Zeus the sugarbaby paces between and around my legs while meowing the whole time. Smokey, the civie, sits patiently until I'm almost done fixing things, and then she goes into the other room to wait for me to bring her food in. If I feed Smokey first, Zeus runs zig zag in front of my the whole time, so I usually try to put his dish down first so that I don't end up falling on my face, LOL. :-D
