Navajo was on the Vetsulin for about 2 months and we changed his cat food to the kind described here by the kind people that had experience with what food to give him. He is completely changed over from any food that contains grain. We took him to the vet once a week to have his sugar checked and we also monitored at home and it kept going down. Our vet reduced the vetsulin to 2 units and one night he had an episode where he walked around in circles, howled and couldn't seem to right himself. I used caro syrup and lots of love and he came out of it. We took him into the vet the next Monday (this all happened on Saturday night) and he had been without insulin for over 36 hours. His levels were all normal and the vet removed the insulin entirely. We do have a couple side effects. One, he is hungry all the time. We feed him small amounts several times per day, which seems to satisfy him, but he wakes us up in the morning by jumping on the bed and Meowing loudly. The second side effect is that he has turned into a kitten again. For a cat that is 13 years old, we have not seen this behavior in quite a long time. He runs through the house, jumps up the wall, climbs on all the furniture, throws his toys in the air and feels wonderful in general. We are continuously laughing at him.
I want to thank all the people here that gave us advice on how to handle the diabetes and what we needed to feed and how to use the monitor, etc. It is very much appreciated. He is a very happy and healthy kitty again! I have learned that I will never feed an animal any kind of food with grain - even starting out - we will start them on grain free food to avoid this problem.
Our vet said this would probably not last forever, but we intend to enjoy every minute with him the way he is and if he has to have insulin and monitoring again, we will know what to do.
So, thank you again for all your help! Bless each and every one of you!

Your vet is right, enjoy every minute and take pictures of your 13 year old kitten to show people later. Good luck!
