Talbot could not overcome his pancreatitis attack. He had spent Friday at his vet getting i.v. fluids and med's. Perhaps we should have put him to sleep that night but we wanted to give him a chance to fight back. He spent the weekend at the emergency vet and he did have some improvement. The emergence vet saw small improvement on Sat. On Sunday he got up and walked around in his cage and held his tail up to urinate. But he was very quiet when I picked him up on Monday morning to take him back to his regular vet. She said she was surprised by how he looked and acted because the emergency vet felt he was improving, as did we. He spent the day there on i.v. fluids and med's and I took him home Monday night. I placed him in a bed in front of his beloved fireplace. We did have a large box around the area just to keep him confined. He perked up after his feeding (nasal tube) and pain medicine. He actually got up and wanted to walk around. I thought he must be turning the corner and his behavior at the vet during the day had just been a small set back. I slept on the couch to be close in case he tried to get out of the box. In the morning he was much more listless and around 10:00 AM he suddenly started breathing rapidly and with his mouth open. I knew then that things had taken a turn for the worse. I called his vet and she and a tech came out around 12:30 PM. I had her feel his stomach because it felt like there were fluids or something there (like after sub-q fluids). She said she could feel a mass and believed it was the pancreas. As sad as I feel that he had to go through all that, I am glad that he was at home with his fireplace on. Paul held him in his lap with his hand around his face, which Talbot always loved.
It's so hard to say goodbye to Talbot. He was incredibly sweet tempered. He loved to have his belly petted and his face rubbed. He kept us company in the family room, pointedly sitting facing the fireplace so you would turn it on for him. Before he became blind, he would stalk squirrels from the window, clean dust bunnies from under the cupboards and watch the waffles in the toaster. We'll miss his little body sleeping next to us in bed every night.
He leaves behind Xena and Sam, his litter mates. They were inseparable, all three always piled into one bed, even though there are three by the fireplace. Talbot always managed to be in the middle, even if it meant perching on top of them.
We and the vets think this was caused by their food, Wellness canned chicken and turkey. It's the only thing that could have caused all three to have pancreatitis. The other two have never had it before. We'll be sending some cans to them for testing but it won't bring Talbot back. The other two are still getting sub-q fluids and pain medicine but they no longer throw up (blood) or have bloody diarrhea. They are eating again, although its Friskies. I can't bring myself to feed Wellness yet.
Our hearts are breaking and we will miss our sweet Talbot.
