I want to thank everyone who answered my early question (Spring of 2011) when Clide was first diagnosed with feline diabetes. Thanks to the help of members, Clide's diabetes was well managed through diet for all of his time with me. I'm so grateful for this community being here and answering questions and helping those who are overwhelmed and frightened with a diagnosis of diabetes.

I sadly said goodbye to my sweet Clide on March 5 2013. Clide had been valiantly, fiercely and bravely battling oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) since September of 2012. He did amazingly well for a very long time, and for that I am grateful. We had high hopes that he would be a rare exception with this awful cancer and that he would beat it. And in a way, he DID beat it for a time. But the cancer wound up winning. And after a great last full weekend at home, it was obvious that he had taken a turn and we did the heart-wrenching but right thing and helped him pass peacefully, without pain or fear. I will miss him eternally.

I adopted Clide from a high kill shelter in the DC Metro area where he was dumped at age fourteen. Clide was my very first senior rescue, and my very first diabetic kitty. He is worth every tear that I've shed since saying goodbye. In his short 2+ years with me, he brought such joy and love and so many smiles and laughs. I am infinitely enriched far beyond anything I gave to him.

My friends at Diabetic Cats in Need asked me to write about Clide for the blog Cat on My Sleeve - and I did. The post can be found here:

I tried to tell his story, and tried to put into words what made him special and why people should always consider an older and/or special needs kitty. The rewards are immeasurable.

Thank you all...
Rena, in loving memory of my sweet Clide.
