Last night she started seeming like something was different - not in distress, but just not closing her eyes when she was lying down, and hanging her head over the water bowl but not drinking, stuff like that that just seemed like any enjoyment she was having in life was gone. She also started struggling some when walking - still getting around, but looking pretty weak and wobbly. I called in to work and took off the rest of the week, feeling like there was just no way she was going to make it to Monday, and I wanted to spend her last days with her, and be able to take her to the vet right away if she started to have any distress.
By this morning she had gone downhill even more, and continued to decline rapidly throughout the morning. So we made the trip to the vets this afternoon, and she passed away there peacefully.
I am relieved that she went peacefully, and although I did make a euthanasia decision, it was clearcut, which is an enormous relief. And I'm so thankful with the vet trip last Saturday that I knew she wasn't in pain and suffering, and we got a few last days together for snuggle time. On Tuesday she actually ate better than she had in a week, she chowed down on some tuna and seemed happy as a clam!
She was a beautiful, sweet tortie cat. I got her from the shelter when she was about 10 months old, and had a wonderful 14 years with her. It does not feel real that she is gone.
