Hello, my dear Simon has been dealing with diabetes, CHF and CKD for nearly a year and now we have some dental issues to contend with. Our vet has been reluctant to put him under for a cleaning (and possible extraction) but lately he has been pawing at his mouth and eating less and less. So, we are scheduled for next Tuesday. She explained all of the precautions she is going to take in consideration of his health issues but still I am super anxious thinking about this. He is 18 1/2 and has had a good life, full of love.....but I hate seeing him in discomfort from his teeth. I keep asking myself if I am being unrealistic, or selfish by putting him through this? Thanks for reading, and for your support.

Not really. Guess the alternative would be to do nothing to address his dental issues. Let him struggle to eat, and be in discomfort for the remaining time he has left with us. That seems so cruel. However, I know the procedure could possible end his life. This is a tough one.

Anesthesia has come a long way and while yes, it will always have an element of risk, if his bloodwork shows his liver is working well and his kidney's aren't too bad, it's really a small risk. At 18 1/2, he may still have several years of life...you wouldn't want him to be in pain and unable to eat for whatever time he has left.

Most of us have been where you're at and we understand how you feel....and we can tell you that you're not going to feel any better until you get that phone call saying "he's all done and you can pick him up soon"!

Thanks Chris, our vet sounded as reassuring as I would expect her to (considering) and since she also has a senior kitty, I believe she knows how I feel. In my gut I think I'm doing the right thing.....but I will be a bundle of nerves until I get that "phone call". Appreciate your support!

Been there!!! I feel for you, Karrie. :nailbiting: :bighug:

Our vets are really good in that, if you ask them nicely, they'll ring as soon as the kitty comes round from the anaesthetic.

I don't know whether or not this might be of help to you, but when Saoirse needed dentals or surgery the vets would give something to reverse the anaesthesia faster once the procedure had been successfully completed. Maybe your vet could advise whether something similar is available for your little fella.

My vet was concerned about putting my guy under so he did a scaling with kitty just sedated instead. Is this an option?
It sounds like Simon may need to have a tooth pulled - there's one that was questionable a few months ago and it's the side of the mouth he has been pawing so I suspect it's giving him some discomfort. Ugh.

Thanks for your support - I plan to ask them to call me as soon as he's coming to.....and I believe they do use the anaesthesia reversal drug. That part scares me more than anything. In my mind I think this is a logical thing to do for him but in my heart I am so anxious!

Be sure to keep us updated, Karrie. Lots of moral support available here whenever you need it! Fingers and paws crossed that all will go well so that your heart can move out of your mouth and back into your chest where it belongs. :)
